Hey Folks,
Wife's Kia sorento has permnanent AWD. In the owners manual it says not to tow it. Says it must be lifted on to a vehicle for transport. Can anyone explain that? Or, is it just to keep someone from dragging it 60 mph behind a motorhome?

Thanks, Dave

We have a Jeep Patriot, it is the same way. No way
to unhook anything. I'm sure you couldn't lift up
one end and pull it, because of the center diff. I
guess you couldn't pull it on 4 wheels because of
turning the transmission. But it sure will go in the
snow and ice, but if you get stuck you are sol, no
place to hook a chain. Vic

Its because both drive shafts are turning and spinning the transfer case and transmission. So your spinning your trans without any tranny fluid to lubricate all the parts. basically short of it is it can grenade your transmission. This is really true of any 4wd. you would have to take the drive shafts out to avoid trouble. Thats why befor you had a rollback truck you would see a tow truck with a car towin it backwards.

There are plentyof 2WD vehicles you also cannot tow. It all depends on the drive-setup and if it gets enough lube when the engine isn't running and it's being towed. Some auto companies specifically make vehicles that can be "dingy" towed behind motor-homes with all four wheels on the ground.

That's what happened............ We put a chain on the trailer hitch and pulled it backward about 60 ft out of the snow. Had the motor off and trans in neutral. Don't think it hurt anything. (I hope)

We have been told that when pulling vehicles
from snow banks to have engine idleing and
transmisssion in neutral to keep oil / fluid
moving in transmission. Sometimes we have
to pull 100 to 500 feet . I doubt that your short
pull would create any problem.
