modine heater

I purchased a used modine hanging heater. I got it up and vented this week. I set the thermastat and it ran fine except it seems to run a few minutes then it shuts off then runs again. It keeps the shop warm but is it normal for it to start and stop so often? My uncle thinks that this is not normal. It seems to be working to me but our older shop heater didn't stop and start so much.

I think there was a recent thread on here about the same problem, it is probably the anticipator in the thermostat, you didn't say what kind you are using. I am using a thermostat without an anticipator, (wide differential) I feel it is more efficient, I set it up and then go into the house for coffee and when I come back it's warm and quite!

Don't take this the wrong way, but do you have a remote thermostat that is in the direction that the heated air blows?

Another is to look for the overtemp limit switch and see if it is opening up. If it is opening up, check to make sure that your flue is not blocked, is not too lengthy or is not undersized.

If the thermostat is on the unit, check to see if it is an old style mercury bulb type. If it is, make sure that the thermostat is level and the heat anticipator is set correctly.
