crankcased

I have been rebuilding a ford 8n,put in new rings
and valves. But when I tighten down the crank main
bearings it won't turn.used the original bearings
that seem in good shape, any ideas?

Did you put the main caps on in the correct location and orientation... I know the front one is the oil pump and can't be mixed up, I can't remember if the middle and back can be interchanged, they can at least be put on flipped right to left, making the bearings bind.

Oh, yeah, WHY did you take the main caps off in the first place if you only replaced the piston rings???

Or are you calling the ROD caps the main caps?

The rod caps, as well, MUST go back on the same rod and in the same orientation, and SHOULD be match-marked/numbered.

Also, is it possible some previous BLEM was in there and SHIMMED the caps and you've lost the shims?

BTW, did you soak the rope-type oil seals in oil, install them, then cut them to length?

If it is related to the mains, torque them down one at a time, then spin the crank. Remember to torque individual cap bolts alternately creeping up on the torque. If torque is say 75 foot lbs. torque 25--25 then 50-50 then 75--75. Then spin the crank. Should spin like it's in butter. Any issues with the old main bearings? Mains and rods are aligned bored and honed which means they have the exact same centerline. As Bob stated they MUST be put back in the same spot facing the same way. If you are not CERTAIN of this take the block to a machine shop and have them align hone the main saddle. It will be money well spent. Hope this helps. Gerard
