Rain = Blessing & Curse

Is there anyone else who's had their work put on hold due to rain or other inclement weather? Our trees need this crazy rain down here in SoCal. However, I now have a major weed problem on my hands and will not be able to get out and disc until it dries up. Considering we've had almost a foot of rain over the last three days who knows when that will be.

Well, the weather has been unusual here in the northeast, as well; as I write this, in the third week of December, the thermometer is at about 34 degrees, and wet snow is falling. We had a pretty good freeze in mid-November, then cold & snowy for a while, then a warm spell with monsoon rains that took all the snow away and thawed the ground, then another freeze. Yesterday the temps were in the high 30's, and this snow is not welcome yet -- I'd like the ground to have a chance to firm back up before the next blanket of snow. All this snow does is insulate the ground, and we'll never be able to travel across the usual "soft spots" in the fields, and some of our woods roads are not fit for travel, so no logs can be hauled until they are.

I never complain too much about the weather, though; I figure it's what the Old Gent wants for us...

What kind of trees are you tending?

I'm tending mostly apricot and peach trees. Due to high water prices this rain is more then welcome. However, the weeds have sprouted up in force and I know the city will be on me very soon. Couple that with the fact that I'm nursing a dislocated elbow and I could be in for it until my elbow heals and the ground becomes workable.

Have to 270' water well to drill, one in a corn feild had 3 days of rain then 8" of snow ground never froze, been working in 18 t0 25* weather, had the service truck stuck to the runing boards in mud got a road plowed free of snow got it frozed up, that well is done. going to move to 2nd well site fri or sat. already have that site plowed and froze. just takes bout 25% longer to do any thing, just have to slow down and do the best we can.

Isn't that the truth. The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. Everybody always sees the income side of a job and not the expense it took to do that job. We do some custom combining in addition to our farm/ranch work. Yes, we can pull in to a field and take in $5000 in an afternoon, but we can also ruin a $2500 tire in a second by running over a deer horn. Did that this summer! Pretty sure the well drilling business is the same way. Can have days where you can make pretty good money and days when you are going backwards.

Cold here now in Michigan. I think we only got 1/10 inch total for July and August. My pond is down 2 feet still. Makes it hard to draw too much water for irrigation, want to make sure I don't have fish kill over the winter.

Hopefully we'll get a lot of snow this winter and spring rains.
