Looking at a used sub-compact tractor. Ad says it has a Briggs/Vanguard 3 cyl diesel. Didn't know such a thing exsisted. Anybody know the good/bad? How many hours are a lot on an engine like that? This particular tractor has less than 200, but I've seen some with 600-1000.

Simplicity made a garden tractor with a Daihatsu diesel engine, 950CC if I remember. Kind of wimpy though.
What is the asking price?

Briggs & Stratton does have their name on a diesel. They also have some gas models, water cooled 3 cyl under the Vangaurd label. Their Vangaurd air cooled engines are made in Japan. In my opinion the Vangaurd air cooled engine is the best air-cooled engine made. They pardnered with Mitsibishi and built the factory in Japan. All Japanese engineering. I was a Briggs dealer when they came out with the diesel, went to a basic school on them. I was pretty impressed. That was 8 or 10 yrs. ago.

Looks like the diesel version is about 3 grand more than the gas version. And not much money saved on diesel vs. gas anymore.

Still need diesel power for your big tractors, but you can buy a lifetime supply of lawnmower gas for 3 grand.

Only a 1 inch shaft ????????????????
A 2 cylinder Wisconsin, made 40 years ago, has
a 1-7/16 shaft !

Gravely also used the Briggs Daihatsu diesel on their 260 zero-turn mower. City has one that I ran one summer working part time for the city. It ran good. Only issue was the starter solenoid coil was loose in the starter breaking the wires and the start would not engage. I replaced the solid wire with stranded. That was two summers ago. City still running it. I lobbied REAL HARD for the city to buy this mower. They have not complained yet. It was bought four years ago.
