Parts Cleaner

What type of solvent do most people use in their parts washer. I've looked at solvents for $50 gal, water base for less. Don't think it would be good since you have to use something floating to collect the oil. Talked to people that use diesel??? I need something that's affordable. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks Mickey

i use mineral spirits in my parts washer...still around 3.50 a gallon at fuel depot...and it doesnt stink like diesel.

Two of my buddies made an agreement that one would buy the parts washer and the other would buy the solvent. The solvent guy got screwed! I think they had to come up with a new way to split it evenly.

I use mineral spirits it works best for me. Diesel fuel works but not near as well, kerosene works better than diesel.

My Friend at the local garage gave me a water based solvent to try. The product in his tank is kept at ~107 degrees F. I made a heater out of pipe and a water heater element and put the whole deal on a 30 minute timer. Ten minutes gets the approx. 3-4 gallons up to usable temperature. To just scrub stuff down quickly, it may not be as effective as the safety kleen but hands down if you are patient and can keep parts rinsed down or soak them I think it works excellent. I am going to make a little bubbler to agitate small parts. The other benefit that I see is that it is much easier on the skin and it is an excellent hand cleaner. Heating it is defiantly the key to making it work!
My 2 cents,
Andy

Lately I have been using gas. Outside. If I leave it in the pan it will evaporate, and I don't need to deal with a pan of dirty solvent. I use neporene gloves to protect my hands. With paint thinner at almost 10.00 a gal I needed to do something. I also use diesel sometimes Stan

Mineral Spirits. The cheapest price(by far) I have found is at a Porter Paints store.

I been using diesel..

I have a home made washer from a small pump, a 55 gal drum, a piece of garden hose, length of pipe, and a "flexible" plumbing hose and a few small pieces of angle iron.

I welded some angle at the "top ring" drilled holes in the lid, set the lid (trimmed with garden hose so it fits tight to the barrel walls) on top the angle, with the pump down in the diesel. I also wrapped hose around the top of the barrel to protect from a sharp edge. It's a little short for a tall guy, but I got bout $20 into the pump, pipe, etc. and about 2 hours time.

I used diesel because I had about 30 gallons of bio fuel go "stale", and I couldn't give it away, so I been using it for this.. When it's all gone and too bad to "clean" I may go to mineral spirits..

Oh, and I just use the "dirty" stuff on a brush fire..

Anything that's unprotected metal in your parts washer will rust if you use a water based cleaner. And the 'environmentally friendly'water based cleaners don't work worth a hoot anyway.

Diesel works well but leaves an oily film, gasoline works well too but you know the danger involved. Mineral spirits dissolves grease fast and it dries off leaving the part dry unless it's time to change the spirits. Mineral spirits does cost more but it can be re-used for a couple of years for the average non-professional shop. Go with the mineral spirits. Jim
