Update on sleeve issues

Well, rather than putting in the sleeve and not being sure if the block is cracked or not i decided to make some plastic plugs for the bores. I filled the block with antifreeze and then pressurized the bore with 20 psi air for about an hour. No bubbles!
I will hook the vacuum pump on it tomorrow and see if it sucks antifreeze into the cylinder. If not I will be mostly convinced that it is not a crack. I will also use loctite sleeve retainer on the bottom of the bores and the top of the sleeves.Took a few pictures am going to try to include them here.

Well if you think it is cracked, you could have the block bored ,and an insert made and pressed in since it is a dry sleeve. I had that done to an 806 diesel 20years ago and is still running that way.

Andy, I can see why you are concerned about a crack. I'm pretty sure that you want to use that sleeve retainer over the whole surface instead of just top and bottom. I bought two bottles for my 4 cyl but one was plenty. with complete contact the sleeve essentially becomes bonded with the block increasing strength and helping heat transfer away from the sleeve.

Doesn't look like a crack to me. I would think if it were a crack, it would be a lot higher in the cylinder.Am guessing it was a problem related to the oil control ring. Good luck.bob

Well, After 1 hr under pressure and 3/4 hr. @ 25 in. vacuum no bubbles (pressure0 or antifreeze in the cylinders (vacuum)I am mostly satisfied there is no crack Thanks for the suggestions and replies! One of the unforeseen benefits of this exercise is that I finally learned to post pictures...It turned out to be quite simple! I really enjoy when others post pics!
MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL,
Andy

Andy I would bet that is not a crack. Someone replaced the sleeve before. They used a chisel to drive/cut the old sleeves out. I have seen many bores damaged that way. Most people don"t have a sleeve puller and will not be real careful removing the old ones. Since it is a dry sleeve you should not have any trouble.
