98 Jeep Laredo /mileage

Son put new cheap $18 muffler on his Jeep. supposed to work for it ? . / It has 280 thousand miles and does not use or leak a drop of oil .it Has a lockout 4 wheel drive feature for 2 wheel only ... he keeps his Vehicle as Nice as i Preach but FAIL to do.. LOL . They Drove up to Niagra Falls . got barely 20mpg. He usually gets 22 mpg on trips , Around 15-18 around here , . SEEMED to Lack FULL Hpr. although no extra load . We wonder if the NEW MUFFLER is TOO INTENSLY BAFFLED or below freezing temps affected the mileage.. ,,he is seriously thinking of removeing the muffler and buying the OME that it calls for.. alL cooments appreciated ,.

If Catalytic Converter equipped I would check to make sure that the internals of the Convertor were not broken during muffler installation. It happened to me one time on a Chevrolet. Vehicle would not run until a new Cat Converter was installed.

You didn't say what route he took ? But if he went through Ohio I have heard our state is the dumping ground for poor gas ? So maybe it was the gas ? Also this time of year they formulate it for cold weather and mileage never is as good.

Jim, What year and engine? Check the catalytic converter. Hit it with your palm and listen for a rattle. If not rattling, use a non contact thermometer on the front and rear AFTER you achieve light-off or after 30 minutes of non stop driving. Rear should be hotter than the front by about 150 degrees. If that's ok then check fuel pressure and volume. We used to duct tape a fuel pressure guage to the windshield and go find a steep hill. Fuel pressure should not drop much at all under heavy load . Hope this helps. Gerard
