One of the "Goose Necks" formed by the San Juan River near Mexican Hat, Utah. There are something like 6 of these, back to back. Can"t get them in a Pic.

Got to thinking about this and went to google, the river is entrenched 1,000 feet below, and due to the Goosenecks travels 5 miles through them to move only 1 mile closer to Lake Powell.

They're called "meanders", the water on the outside of the bend travels faster than on the inside, that erodes the outside banks and the slower flow on the inside drops sediment there, making the curve even more extreme. Eventually the outside of the adjacent bends will erode enough to meet, the river will flow straight through and the curved part will be left as an "oxbow" lake, the shape of a horse shoe, if you will...
