Battery Electrical connections

4020 throwed me fits today ,after feeding cows i shut it off, went back 10 minutes later WTH !!!... I really DISPISE THOSE TRIPLE E SCRAP CASH CONVERTORS (batteries) got a poor connection somewhere because sometimes the starter will hardly crank , cure was a double jump , wifes car on one side and battery 30 amp charger on the other twisted on tite starter wires VIOLA !!... , is lithium Grease as good for battery and electrical connections as anything else ??? .,, what do you use? , do you use anything different on battery posts than other electrical posts ...its time to daub all of them around here with a dose of something ,,. give Us Your 2 cents worth of ideas..

I have used plain old Vaseline. kept a jar in wood shop to keep hands from drying out with the saw dust till I went to the fine finish part.

got to thinkin one day moisture and air causes corrosion so eliminate both of them and walla!!

also use it before getting in heavy grease washes off much easier won't let the black stuff deep in skin pores.

Don't know what the right way and wrong way is, but the army way was to cover the terminals with gun grease. I've had enough corrosion issues that I sometimes pour some baking soda around the posts. Any moisture in the air will help keep them clean. Now I use that little spray can of stuff they sell.

Have used anti seize the gray stuff for 25 yrs, works so good that you would think it was made for it!!!!

Next time you clean them (or if you just did) lay a penny on top about the middle of the battery. Just clean or replace the penny when it's covered with corrosion. Much quicker/easier than removing/cleaning cables and costs a couple of cents a year.

Check your battery cables for voltage drop. I had a hard starting JD4020. The cables "looked" good. I rebuilt the starter, replace the batteries, had the generator rebuilt. Still would crank slow. Finally checked the voltage at each end of the cables and found the cross over cable was corroded inside the plastic. Replaced that cable and it cranked like new.

As for battery cable ends. I have used Fluid Film for years and it works well.

Jim, Like some have said clean them well and use vaseline. Dielectric grease works fine too. Make sure all your connections are clean and tight. Voltage drop test is a good idea unless you are sure it's a battery issue. Don't use regular multi-purpose grease. Hope this helps.

Shouldn't use dielectric anything, that's made to be an insulator - the last thing you want when trying to make a good connection...

Im just NOT a big fan of grease or oil on top of the battery terminals which may warm and ooze down BETWEEN the battery posts and the battery terminal connectors i.e. the place where it can come in between and form an electrical insulation barrier between the battery post and the cable. I prefer that area (the electrical junction) be lead to lead WITHOUT oil or grease or vaseline which isnt as good of an electrical conductor (its more like insulation) as lead. I dont like any resistive less conductive material (grease or oil or vaseline) getting between the battery post and the lead cable connector.

Before anyone has a calf SURE it helps reduce corrosion because it keeps oxygen and acidic vapor and hydrogen gas off the terminals and battery posts AND SURE it stops that ugly unsightly destructive white powdery corrosion. If a body dabs grease over the terminals SURE it keeps oxygen away buttttttttt I just dont want any getting between the post and connector.

As a used tractor dealer and farmer having dealt with literally hundreds of batteries IVE HAD THE BEST LUCK USING THOSE FELT WASHERS UNDER THE TERMINALS WITH A LIGHT SPRAY (and I avoid right on top where it may get between post and terminals) OF THAT RED BATTERY TERMINAL PROTECTIVE SPRAY..........When Ive done that I NEVER HAD ANY CORROSION OR CONNECTION PROBLEMS EVERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

So its your tractor and yall are welcome to your own methods of preventing battery terminal corrosion and Im NOT saying coating with grease or vaseline doesnt prevent corrosion (cuz it does) Im ONLY saying In my opinion (per my own experience and the reasons above) its better to use the felt washers underneath and a light (NOT right on top) spray of battery terminal anti corrosive........

That my story and my method (and experience and reasoning) n Ima stickin to it lol

PS on that 4020 Id remove, clean n wire brush bright n re atatch each n every battery and terminal and solenoid and starter connection

Best wishes n Merry Christmas to all

Ol John and all

,,Fairly certain the problem is bad connections on the Solenoid /starter area..... Help me Along , Dave , Does the peny neutralize and attract corrosion away fron the posts and connnectors ???, therefore requiring less cleanings , .. seems like there could be a worknig science there .... thanx for all Your comments , and Thank you to the hosts of YESTERDAYS TRACTORS , without the Sharing of ideas ,, many of us would be groping in the Dark.. jh

The proof is in the pudding......... Cost you a penny to find out.
just lay it on top (maybe wedge it between the caps) and watch. When it gets covered, just brush it off or throw it away and replace.

Dave

I dabbed a little gasket sealer and stuck a penny to one of the 2 batteries under the hood of my diesel truck last night.. (the sealer to keep the penny put.. with our rough roads, it needs something to help keep it put LOL)..

We'll see what happens Dave LOL...

(have heard before that this works though)

I always put a dab of gray anti-seize compound on all battery connections. It prevents corrosion and ensures a better electrical contact than you'll get with a bare connection or or one that's been greased.

LPS3 works grate for this. I would think an Anti Oxidant grease will work grate to.
