OT Computer BHO

I keep getting popups saying that a BHO(browsier helping operation) has been installed in my computer. Ask me if I want it removed or leave it. I have been removing it as I did not install it. My Question is, just what exactly is a BHO?

Hello illefty,
Run a scan with all you got.
It may be a virus ar something like malware snooping in there.
Guido.

I would go get Malwarebite and run their free scan and clean up. My wife got hit with System tool 2.20 and they clean it right up. The link below is where I got the program. It is probably one of the best for these kind of things.

McAfee didn't have a clue and could not detect the virus. I went to get support and they wanted 90 bucks to try and fix it.

I suggest that you download these two excellent and free antispyware softwares, Superantispyware and Malwarebytes Ant-Malware Then do a full scan with them both. Between them they will find and kill any nasties that your Antivirus software might miss.
Good luck.

run BHO on google, here is an excerpt from Wiki:

Concerns
The BHO API exposes hooks that allow the BHO to access the Document Object Model (DOM) of the current page and to control navigation. Because BHOs have unrestricted access to the Internet Explorer event model, some forms of malware have also been created as BHOs. For example, the Download.ject malware installs a BHO that would activate upon detecting a secure HTTP connection to a financial institution, record the user's keystrokes (intending to capture passwords) and transmit the information to a website used by Russian computer criminals. Other BHOs such as the MyWay Searchbar track users' browsing patterns and pass the information they record to third parties.

Many BHOs introduce visible changes to a browser's interface, such as installing toolbars in Internet Explorer and the like, but others run without any change to the interface. This renders it easy for malicious coders to conceal the actions of their browser add-on, especially since, after being installed, the BHO seldom requires permission before performing further actions. For instance, variants of the ClSpring trojan use BHOs to install scripts to provide a number of instructions to be performed such as adding and deleting registry values and downloading additional executable files, all completely transparent to the user [1]. The DyFuCA spyware even replaces IE's general error page with an ad page.

We call that "McCrappy" in The UK. Some computers come with it pre installed so the user can try it for themselves for a limited period . Every PC I have had I have uninstalled it and bought something else. Funny thing is, if you look on Youtube and watch some computer experts trialling some internet security software, usually by throwing some malware and Trojans at it, just to see if it detects them, they usually end the review with something like "Now I will install Malwarebytes just to see what got missed!" = They know only to well that Malwarebytes is such an awesome program.
