What would be the effective range of a
NORMA 6.5 carcano ammo.
we are going to be shooting a carcano 6.5/m91
made by beretta total length from butt plate to the tip of barrel is 36".
The ammo that we will be shooting will be norma 6.5 156 grain soft point.
MANY THANKS

Yeah, I have to agree, JFK would think they are pretty danged accurate.

Seriously though, a round like that is OK to 200 yards easily, and in the right hands out to 400 yards. I dont think the round would be the limiting factor so much as the quality of those old guns. If it is surplus, how it was taken care of, is the barrel shot out, etc.

No it is not, it is very clean, you can see the riflings bright and clear and there is a twist to the cleaning rod with a soft wire brush on it.
ehen cleaning. OOOOOOO rust in it or on it,

MANY THANKS

Effective for what? Targets? Big game? Woodchucks?

6.5mm bullets typically have very high ballistic coefficients. In fact, various 6.5 mm cartridges are commonly used in 1000 yard matches. But it looks like the Norma ammo is loaded with a round nose bullet with a so-so BC of .326. The muzzle velocity is a mediocre 2300 fps. So it's going to be inferior to, say, the .260 Remington which pushes a 140 grain, .526 BC bullet to 2700 fps. Still, according to Norma, it retains almost 1000 ft-lbs of energy at 300 yards, which ain't too shabby. By comparison, a 180 grain .30-06 will have about 1500 ft-lbs of energy at 300 yards.
Norma 6.5 Carcano

If your going to shoot Norma, there are things that you might want to know. Norma projectiles for the 6.5 Carcano are .264 in diameter. Most rifles and carbines are .268 in diameter. Norma is a little loose down the bore so your rifle will not shoot as accurately as you might have hoped. SAVE THE BRASS. Thankfully, there are some manufacturers now producing ammo that is the proper diameter. Graff and hornady are a couple of the companies that sell it. I learned this the hard way a couple of years ago when I bought a like new mod 41(essentially a 91 with updated sights) and a box of norma. It didn"t shoot extremely bad but the group size was about 4" at 50yds. A friend told me about the diameters and slugged the bore for me and he was right. He loaded my brass with .268 diameter bullets which shrunk the group down to 2" at 100yds. I was impressed.

I hope this helps.

Norma may have changed recently so I suggest that you measure the diameter of your projectiles.

The Carcano rifle is the rifle that Lee Harvey Oswald used.

So I will say that the effective range of the Carcano rifle is effective enough to kill a white guy while riding in a rag-top limo with his wife. While shot from the window of a building, or the grassy knoll.

Of course the FBI, CIA, or even aliens could have killed Kennedy. I hear the twilight zone music playing now.

Check you casing swell. This can effect accuracy. I have found many old military rifles with good rifling and bad chambers.
