Small diesel equipment is going to become much more expensive and complicated.Or disappear from the market.
The chart didn't cut and paste as desired so the link is included.

a - hand-startable, air-cooled, DI engines may be certified to Tier 2 standards through 2009 and to an optional PM standard of 0.6 g/kWh starting in 2010
b - 0.4 g/kWh (Tier 2) if manufacturer complies with the 0.03 g/kWh standard from 2012
c - PM/CO: full compliance from 2012; NOx/HC: Option 1 (if banked Tier 2 credits used)—50% engines must comply in 2012-2013; Option 2 (if no Tier 2 credits claimed)—25% engines must comply in 2012-2014, with full compliance from 2014.12.31
d - PM/CO: full compliance from 2011; NOx/HC: 50% engines must comply in 2011-2013

and yet tier 2 engines are being built But they have to be exported to other countries. Local Deere engine distributor just shipped 300 gen sets to Argentina & Mexico with tier 2 engines.
The tier 4 100 plus horsepower irrigation power units are going to roughly double in price compared to tier 3's...
All of this has made the older series engines/ power units ie 4045, 276, 414, 6068 etc around here go way up in price. Buy an old wore out one and totally overhaul it and still be a third of the price of a tier 4 and have something that will stand up for another 15 to 20 years. the tier 4's wont be around that long !

Older machines are going to be worth more, And we will probably see some engine builders exit the market, as Cat left the truck engine market, rather than try to meet the latest standards..

It"s beyond me why the EPA is wasting their efforts on off road equipment. They are a drop in the bucket numbers-wise when compared to the over the road equipment. And the majoity of ag equipment in particular operates operates in the wide open spaces.

But if you have regulators, I guess they have to regulate to justify their exisitance

Ive taken several courses for the new EPA regulations, At least on the deere side. Let me tell you that if you are in the market for a new tractor in the next couple years, Go out and buy NOW. The new regeneration on these deere's engines looks like its going to be a nightmare. The larger HP tractors have a diesel injector in the exhaust to clean the particle filter. This only happens every so often but when it does do not plan on doing any work, As the engine will derate itself to an idle if it needs to. This year has been one of the best years for a lot of dealership's across the country because everyone is trying to buy now before this stuff comes out.

However, They are doing the same thing to over the road trucks, Its CAT i believe that cant make the standards so they will not be making over the road engines anymore.

Some of the worst global pollution comes from the ships coming here from China, loaded down with cheap crap to fill the aisles at Walmart..

Its just a pile of horse crap.

I got a tier 4 105 HP 4 cyl perkins diesel in my compact trackloader. The damn thing is twice as thirsty as my old 105 hp 6 cyl in my cockshutts and it smokes worse
So much for supposedly more fuel efficiency, what a joke.

Its just like the 2cycle engines Sthil and others have come out with small 4 stroke engines, called 4mix, you still have add oil to the gas.Your still burning the oil? so how is that less pollution? I dont think you can even buy a brand new 2cycle ATV, or dirt bike here anymore. Its all 4stroke now.

That's an easy one, Jerry.

The trucking industry spends much more on lobbyists than does the relatively unorganized farming community.

I heard from my Deere dealer that the small diesels might just go away entirely (large garden tractor, compact utility, commercial lawn mower). The expense of making them Tier 4 is so high that they'll just go to gasoline.

I may catch a bunch of Boos for saying this, Diesel fumes give me an instant headache. 3 years ago I wanted to buy a sub-compact loader/backhoe that was gas powered. I had to settle for a Terramite, T5C. At the time, I would have loved to have purchased a brand name from a local dealer. Everything I found were 3 cylinder diesel. I'm not sure, but I don't think they were made in America like the T5C.

Perhaps something good may come from the Tier IV emission specs and we may start using engines made in America.

Try running Jet A-1 is a diesel to reduce the fumes and smell. The stuff isn't cheap but it's clean and doesn't gel in winter.

Cat could meet the standards but decided at this time to use resources developing the off-road stuff which is really their "meat and potatoes". Good chance Cat will be back after the dust settles. One major consideration was Cummins played the game better and banked significant emissions credits, which allowed them to produce/sell engines that didn't meet the new standards. Cat didn't and would be selling more expensive, complicated and likely less fuel efficient engines. Which engine do you think a trucker would buy? Eventually Cummins will use up the credits and be required to sell an engine that meets the standards. At that time expect Cat to reevaluate the market and make a decision whether or not to reenter.
