ANyone monkeyed with a 12 DOWN to 6 volt alternator (Delco) conversion? IF so how hard was it and what was the $??

Easy as going to the local electric rebuilder and asking for 6/8 volt utility 1 wire lead conversion. Cost quoted was about $60.00 for GM S10 base. Available also with couple days wait was smaller Motorola based model or a English Lucas based- needed regulator $29.95 retail bill or $20.00 cash. Current output 7.5 to 9.5 volts /20 amps at 500 rpm for charging batteries at idle in cold weather. These were for tractor , old car, or utility whatever use or old VW upgrades. A Bosch based VW could also be done for pre 1966 Beetles - was built on the 1970s VW alternator that had blower fan bolted to back side and meant for Wisconsin winter in upgraded collector types that were still running 6 volt lights.

You can buy a 6 volt internal regulator for a Delco 10SI, 12SI - for around $15. Takes ten minutes to stick one in - as long as you're comfortable pulling apart an alernator. Delco 10 and 12 SI are about the easiest on the planet. Later CS series more difficult.

I did one for a friend. He wanted enough amps to run extra lights and charge the battery quickly after starts. Worked great. 6 volt flashers for his warning lights are becoming difficult to find. A bonus is that the 6 volt battery lasts longer since it is kept properly charged, and also not overcharged as is possible with just a cutout.
