As with my 8.3L Cummins question, this is neither antique nor tractor, but I wanted to put this where it would definitely be seen.
A buddy just had an oil leak fixed in the front of his engine. It had started developing electrical gremlins prior to the repair. They replaced the alternator as the old one was oil soaked. But the issue is not only still present, it's getting worse fast. His tach. cuts in and out, his check engine light flickers on, his voltage drops, and basically his whole electrical system starts to fail. He has checked and/or added grounds. Interesting- it will throw sparks from the belt! He has been directed to the crank sensor. I wonder if it isn't a bad/broken wire from the alt. output?
Thanks to those who responded before. I have a definite objective on my 8.3 now.

Did this truck had DC electric weld on it recently

When welding with electric arc on a vehicle the battery must be disconnected to avoid electrical /electronic components damage.

It may also be cused by corroded electrical firewall thru connectors.

A test with OBDII tester may lead to the defect.

Good luck

oone thing to check is trailer outlet at rear. Salt can get in there an corode things an cause short. Also make sure your abs is working by actually making a simulated maxim breaking stop. My 97 2 wheel drive i almoost hit a car in rear on interstate. Brakes worked normally but not in panic stop. Culprit was corosion in trailer conection .

Probably the crank sensor. Since it had an oil leak in the front of the engine, the sensor may be dirty or oil soaked. You may luck out by taking it off, cleaning it up, and reinstall it with a .040 gap between it and the balancer.( a thick business card will do the trick also) The crank sensor has to work to let the ECM "know" the engine is running,or the tack won't work, the alternator won't charge, and if its an auto it won't go into overdrive or lockup.Make sure the connector is clean also.If it is bad get one from cummins, alot less expensive than Dodge, and alot more reliable than the aftermarket ones.

Check the ground wire to frame on the left battery..... and the other grounds in that bundle...... Two thousand dollars worth of mechanical work and I found it when it quit yet again on the side of the road........
