Winch mounted on equipment trailer......

After using a couple of chains and a come-along to manually winch an old Jeep up on my trailer this past weekend I thought about buying a "cheap winch" to mount on my trailer as I'm getting too old to keep doing it the hard way. Was thinking on mounting a 10000 lb winch on trailer and was wondering if anyone has had good look with a cheap brand from somewhere like Harbor Freight, Tractor Supply, or even Ebay. Don't want to spend alot on something that really isn't going to be used very much. I know some of you diehards are going to say buy a Warn but I'm not going to put that much money out for a trailer winch. I've got a 12000 and an 8000 lb Warn on a pickup and a bronco and they are good tools to have when needed but just want some input on the cheaper brands for my trailer. Kind of want to stay in the $300 price range.

Shoot I got a cheap Champion 2000lb winch for my atv plow from tsc for $69 bucks. Its lasted me 2 seasons now, lifting and lowering the plow.

I have one of those cheap ones. 2000 dead pull and 6000lbs rolling and it is pure junk. It will not even begin pulling 2000lbs and that is with a snack block which should double the pull. Go good or not at all. Oh by the way that is one of 4 that I have and my highest $$ one has been my best one but it is about wore out now

I bought a HF 9K winch. I hooked it to a tree, pulling it away from a house as I was cutting it. I don't know about the 9K rating, but it dragged my 3/4 ton GMC backward without a grunt. Not the latest tech, no wireless remote, a wired one instead, but for $300, a very good deal.

i got a 8k winch from HF on sale 4-5 years ago on sale for 299.00
its paid for itself many times over and still works as good as day 1...i learned a lesson on Warn winches years ago...mount the solenoid box out of the weather...did same on HF setup and ran longer cables.

Check out SAMS. My brother bought a 10,000 lbs. one there last year for his trailer and it has worked good so far.

On my gooseneck I have a good heavy geared handcrank winch that a neighbor gave me. My bumper pull has a heavy boat winch that was free too. No sense spending a lot of money. I borrowed a trailer once with a gasoline engine drive hydraulic winch. I cranked and cranked on that thing getting it started. I said "never again" at least with mine every turn of the crank I make progress.

try mounting winch on a reciver stub and 2 inch tube to let winch stub slide in then can use it on any pickup with reciver hitch works well for me

That's just what I was going to say. If you have an 8000lb. I would make or buy a mount with a receiver. Then weld a receiver socket on the trailer. That is what I have done and it works very well. Also can be mounted on the pickup, tractor or with a big clevis chained to any solid object. I have done that also. I googled winch mounts and looked at several pictures and went to the shop and made mine. If you already have the winch this would be a very cheap fix.

Well I think I may go with a cheaper brand winch and build me a weather proof cover to cover it with after mounting it on the trailer. The receiver type winch mount is a good idea but I do not care to remove my 2 Warns from my truck and bronco to do this as they are both recessed in Warn winch bumpers and would be more trouble than its worth. Found a 10000 lb winch on Ebay for $299 with free shipping that looks like a pretty good deal, it is a Vortex brand. Never heard of those before but I did notice it is sold through a dealer in my home state of Alabama, think I'll give them a call as they have a phone number listed with their ad.

I got tired of trying to get dead tractors and cars on my trailer with HD come-alongs. I decided I was going to mount a 12 volt Warn recovery winch on my trailer. Then I came across an old cast-iron, hand-crank winch at a yard-sale for $50. Best investment I ever made. It is two-speed (by switching crank location). Has a brake, free-spool, etc. It will pull anything my trailer 12K lb. can handle - even a dead crawler.

Now, I'd never consider an electric winch. My trailer sits most of the time where I can't see it. An electric winch would be an attractive item for somebody to steal, and also requires 12 volt power.

I'm sure this old winch would be very expensive if sold new, now-adays. But, I've seen them now and then for $50 at auctions and yard-sales. I hadn't suspected how powerful and rugged they are - until actually using one.

The hand crank winch from an old John deere elevator makes a good trailer winch also. The one I have (but no longer use) is a 20 to 1 reduction and had the 3/8" cable already on it. It takes a lot of spinnin' on the handle, but will pull a Farmall H or similar tractor up and onto a deck-over trailer very easily.

I have mine set up so it slips into a reciever. I also built a reciever for the front of my pickup. Then I can use it on the front or back of my pickup as well as my trailer. Gerald

Mount a trailer ball on the front of one of the pickups with winch. Unhook trailer from rear, turn truck around and attach on front ball, and use truck winch. Not really much of a hassle when you consider how seldom you actually need a winch.

A 5 gallon plastic gas can with the bottom cut off makes a very good winch cover. Hold it in place with a couple of tarp straps.

I used a big plastic storage tub , inverted, to keep the weather off of my son's Briggs engine on his dump trailer. A long tarp strap holds it on. About $13 for the tub, and MADE IN THE USA!!!!

(quoted from post at 13:08:44 12/08/10) Cheaper here than Northern Tool by several hundred dollars. It will move anything you hook it to!
Superwinch 10,000 lb

That's the deal of the day,,, I have a 8K supper,,, paid $399 for it,,, it does a great job,,, it did not come with a roller fairhead so Had to drop another $50 for one...

Mike, I've been doing that for years with my pickup, but its getting to be a hassle to unhook trailer and reconnect to front of truck then have to disconnect and hook back up to rear of truck after winching vehicle or vintage tractor up on trailer. Was a good way to do it but I'm too old and too impatient to go back to doing it that way. Going to buy a cheap winch.
