Cummins Diesel (Dodge) questions

I know there are some dodge/cummins websites, but I need some no nonsense feedback. I have a 2001 dodge diesel that"s got a little over 100k. Not had to do any work to it except for standard stuff (fuel/oil filters, grease, etc).
Is there any specific things I should replace with this many miles that aren"t mentioned in the book, such as sensors, etc?
Thanks

your lift pump! if it hasnt been done already. the dodge pumps wear out pre-maturely causing major damage to your injector pump(usually about 1k-1500 for a reman). then i would put a fuel pressure gauge on it. pressure should be about 17 or so lbs at idle. anything below 10 is bad news. also i would get an aftermarket lift pump, the dodge ones, even the "up-graded" pumps are weak. becideds that if the trans is good and the steering is tight your good

Hello LukesDAd,
Besides doing the fuel pump upgrade, it would be a good idea to go over the valves.
You may find most of then close to specs, but it only takes one out a few thousands, to make it worth while doing the check.
Guido.

they are right on , valves adjusted at 100k and a lift-fuel pump if the pressure is not up to standard

Kevin, if the tank pump has to be replaced Chrysler will give you what they call an upgrade that includes a bigger pump, wiring and relay that does away with the lift pump. About a year ago I took my 98 Cummins in to have the fuel sender replaced, which of course includes the pump and that's when I found about this $$$ upgrade $$$. I had planned on doing it myself but shoulder surgery axed that plan so I had to pay through the nose for the extra labor to install this 'upgrade'. Then I had to put a $2500 injection pump on it because the previous owner ran it out of fuel a few times. Install that pressure gauge. The injection pump does not like to be under fed. Jim

I think on the 24 valve they upped the valve adjustment to 150k miles, do a search on yahoo. Change the lift pump. Fass fuel makes a replacement I believe, bd power makes a pump kit as well. A nice website is the turbo diesel register, you have to be a member to get all of the perks on the computer but its well worth it. www.tdr1.com

If truck is a auto id give it a good flushing and change filter/oil. maybe do a little front end work that seems to be a problem.

Other than that, truck outta run ok and engine should be great.

I do not install dodges upgraded transfer pump. The local diesel shop has a good transfer pump that I have had luck with. The pump has a check valve in it so that if it does go bad the fuel will bybass so not to cause a restriction and cavitating the fuel. I usually adjust the vavle to .010 on the intake and .017 on the exhaust.

Not doing the upgrade in tank style lift pump is very unwise. Google "Killer Dowel Pin". If that pin falls out and you're lucky, it only punches a hole in the timing cover.

get on my tail and give me The fuSS ! . never adjusted the valves or so much as changed valve cover gaskets !. All I do is change Oil and fuel filters on my 1995 Cummins dodge ,, served Me well 330 thousand miles , Master brake Cyladar once ,starter once , lift pump 1 time , luky Never swapped out water PUMP YET ! ball joints 2 many times , littlebitty Brake pads WAY toomany times ,, I bought lifetime pads 5 pads sets ago , and they gave me another set last week ...

i was refering to a 24valve but the 12 valves are the same way with the feed pump except the require a bit more pressure. a fuel pressure gauge is cheap insurance that could save your expen$ive injector pump( p-pump for 12 valve or vp-44 for the 24 valve). the KDP (killer dowel pin) is more for the 12 valver's to worry about. some of the early 24 valves had parts used from the 12 valves so they to must be checked. after 99.5 or so those parts were used up and the kdp was re-designed. dodge cummins forum has a LOT of info on these trucks and what keeps them going, as well as bumping up the power a little or a lot. i have an 01' cummins and love it, they last a long time if maintained, that maintenance includes the lift pump. fass, airdog, and raptor are the most common aftermarket replacement pumps. i sugest the raptor because it re-uses the stock fuel filter.

Dont quote me, But i thought the 24v's all had a concern for the KDP also, When doing research for the 12v's kdp i found that 24v's also needed to be checked?

early 24 vlaves, its hit or miss really but after 2000 most of the 12 valve gear cases we used up. the new ones have a beveled edge where the kdp lives, keeping it from coming out. the only way to know for sure is to pull it all apart and take a look. but your right, some of the 24 valve ISB engines do have an un-beveled gear case where the kdp is.
