I need to replace the electrical cord on the tank heater on my case-intl 485. do you know if I need to drain the liquid in order to be able to rempve the bottom part of the heater to replace the cord?

For safety reasons, I'd replace the complete unit.

If the unit is old enough/has been used enough that the cord is bad, likely there's internal connections corroded/overheated/loose/damaged, etc..

To many tractors/shops/buildings have been burnt up by defective engine heaters.

I will second the observation about sheds burning down from tank heaters.
