free seed to big operators, trips to mexico, hand held radios (micogen), tools ect, ect.but I have to pay up to $230.00/bag for vt3 (with discounts)No wonder seed corn is so expensive! Dad always said good seed sells itself. At least a few companies have better prices like Titan Pro, Albert Lea seed house ect.

Don't know that I'm exactly "tired" of it, but it does make you wonder how much of your per-bag dollar is buying "prizes"... My two main seed guys do the best they can for the little guy on working with price breaks and working things in, and at only a little over 200 acres total crop, I appreciate what they do for me. Do I wish seed was cheaper?? I don't know anyone that doesn't. I got a jacket and a couple hats last week for a 40 acre soybean order, I probably bought both, but if they stop giving it away, the prices won't decrease, so may as well take what you can get. I put a lot of stock in my representatives. They could be giving away great stuff for low order amounts, but if I don't like the seed or the salespeople, I'm not buying it, no matter the "reward". I never put all my eggs in one seed company's basket anyway.

At about 1000 acres of corn/year. We usually get at least three jackets and several hats each year. Dad got the same with about 350 acres of corn each year. This is from Pioneer and he does buy some soybean seed from them too. They usually are good for at least one meal per year at a field day if not a bought lunch at a restaurant. They help put in a test plot, usually providing free seed, and bring a weigh-wagon in the fall. He does buy some Dupont chemicals, especially Asana but not may. Dekalb, Asgrow, and Montsanto don't do very much and they get a pretty large percentage of acres too. Like the other guy said, you pay for it. I never remember him getting much over 6 bags of seed. Its definitely not free. This is all in the South. I figure you guys in better farming country get a few more perks than we do.

Our local cofee shop has a few wisper words--or (back stabbing) in simple terms.

Notice the salesmans life style---old pickup truck, or a new one each year? Does he work 24/7, or did he just get back from a vacation?

A pair of dirty hands, or a lot of shinny things on his hands, and maybe a cell phone taped to his ear to boot?

Does his wife work out of the house, or a full time party gall / shopper?

There are several more smart remarks, but I can't think of them right now. They do make you think a little however, and not always accurate, (or even nice).

I know a farmer by Red Oak Iowa, who is a Garst seed dealer. I asked him whether all the TV and radio ads sway anyone, ever. He said no. Why do they continue doing it then? He said it is to keep their name out there. They have never tried it without, so not sure what would happen...! Greg

The totally worm out grease soaked give me hats worn out in public is a looser. Now for the give me stuff over the years ebay sales on many are really good. Very good sales man ship for a free coat you buy thousands of dollars of product, which at Farm and Fleet you can get get a nice Carhart coat on sale for 40 bucks. Mom still uses give me kitchen knives from the 50's. When the crop is out put on a new hat guys. See what the Doctors get and you will never take a give me hat again.

When I was growing up we had 4 of the little Stevens Favorite .22 rifles - my Grandfather got them for buying a certain brand of corn seed in the 1920s. Wish they'd go back to offers like that.

Giveaways?! The only thing I ever get from Fielders Choice Direct is a statemant about twice a month.

It is just like beer, soda, telecommunication companies, banks, etc. ----the consumer pays for all if it in the end.

Ever see a Pepsi scoreboard? Coke? Stadium named for a company? And the list goes on.

I prefer to choose the charities/entities of my choice and get the tax break rather than semi-forced donation for which the big companies get the tax breaks.

Guess that is why I buy store brand soda (when I buy any at all) for a fraction of the cost of the name brand ones so that I have a choice where any potential donation goes.

Well of course the consume pays for the advertising. We also pay the production costs of the next batch of the product.

It's called BUSINESS, and without it we'd be living in caves.

How else would you have them pay to continue and grow the business?

I forgot about the free meals.. I've consumed three of those in the past two weeks... The corn I'm planting this spring is about the best deal I've got... the company's deal is Over X units (Can't remember the number, but it's more than I plant in two years) and they throw in the refuge for free (which is obviously substantial.) My guy has got it somehow worked out for everyone that the refuge is provided, whether you buy 6 bags or 600. My seed guy has a rough time delivering seed with his planting to do as well, but he makes it a priority. He's not driving a new truck the past four years, and I don't think he ever vacations... He plants what he sells and has an open door and open fields. Not a lot of guys like that around anymore.

I got a flashlight from my seed guy gave to me during harvest in the field one year and a truck driver was upset about not getting one. I told the driver the flashlight would cost him $20 at the local true value hardware but mine cost $155 a bag. Point is they are nice gifts but you still pay to get them. I had a competitor giving me free stuff in the mail all winter one year and never did buy the seed. I got a pocket rocket weather meter and the best was 2 one dollar bills when the price was $1.48 per bushel.
