Please excuse the interruption....
I was asked if my John Deere 60 has a road gear.
Can anyone tell this idiot how to tell if it does or not?
Thanks for your help!

If it has 6th gear that is "road gear" probably a blazing fast 12-14 mph downhill with a tail wind. Possibly much faster down hill if he kicks it out of 6th at the top of the hill

The old farmers always called it "Road Gear" because the only place they would use the top gear was on the road. I got chewed out pretty hard because I used it in the field

6th gear on the Deere 60 is road gear, about 11 MPH on my 60. I go down the road with mine all the time while using it to rake hay in the summer.

"Road Gear" is a phrase left over from the days when the tractors were being converted/ shifted from steel rear wheels to rubber. as an example my brothers '37 F-20 came out on steel and has a 4th gear top speed of about 4 1/2 miles per hour. My cousins F-20 from '36 came out on rubber and 4th gear (Road Gear) is 11 mph.
