O/T lambs to slaughter

My dad and I took some of our lambs to slaughter yesterday. Spent the morning with the butcher watching - it was an experience to say the least (these were the first lambs I'd ever taken to slaughter).

It's tough to watch them die but I sure will feel a lot better about what I'm eating when they make their way back onto my plate. They were fine waiting in the truck as we took them off one by one. None of them made a noise while waiting until there was only one left, I felt bad for him.

Make's me think of a lamb led to slaughter that took my place a long time ago. Had every reason to complain but did not. Don't know why he did it but I'm so glad he did.

I had a baddddddddd day years ago when I hauled a big flock of sheep to market. I like to never got them loaded, as most know they will follow the first one buttttttttt getting that first one to go up the ramp in the truck was a nightmare. I finally caught one and tied his A$$ in the truck lol

Okay, so I get to Indy and want to unload them YOU GUESSED IT I couldnt get them out of the truck with a stick of dynamite, they huddled noses in the front truck corner n wouldnt budge despite severe physical and verbal abuse on their bodies grrrrrrrr Then someone helped me get one drug down the ramp n the rest stampeded n neary killed me running over me to get out grrrrrrrr

I HATE SHEEP

Thats my story n Ima stickin to it

When the girl's were in 4H it was always a sad day when they left the steers for the last time, as they knew where they were going. Stan

Whadda coinkydink! I got a load goin' tomorrow.

I've set up a catch pen and rigged my trailer so I can crowd 'em right up into it and close the gate slick as a smelt. I'll have to take a couple of pictures tomorrow.

I usually have to load up at oh-dark-thirty to get to the slaughterhouse on time (they want them delivered not later than 9am and it's a two hour drive). They changed the rules this year and will take them the day before between 3 and 5 pm.

They've got their receiving pen rigged so I can back up to it, drop the ramp, nudge the trailer right up tight against the building so the sheep can't go anywhere but into the holding pen. I have an internal gate on the trailer to keep them in when I drop the ramp.

What kind of sheep are those?

Years ago my dad hauled livestock for a living, as well as farmed. One of his wise sayings " There's only one thing dumber than a sheep, its owner"

i know why i raise sheep-- they make more dollars per acre than my cows do-- i love my cows-- the bank doesnt care where the green comes from-- fortunately the farm was fenced for sheep when i got it--

Ive heard that but how much harder are they to care for? Herd health, coyote control, keeping in? Can you run them in the same pasture as cattle?

they're called Jacob Sheep (suppose to date back to Biblical days- literally Jacob's Sheep)...the ewes usually only get to be 90-100lbs and the rams are around 150-180...lambs are around 50-60lbs. the horns make for nice handles although if you don't pay attention, they can make for a painful wake up call too.
