I"ve got my IH 574 split to replace the clutch and have been trying to decide if I should replace the rear main seal while I am in there. The seal is not leaking but I can"t decide if I should replace it now or not. What does everyone think??

It's cheaper now to put it in while you have it apart, then to re-assemble with the old seal intact, just waiting to go out so you can repeat the process of another tear dowm. USE A GOOD MAKE SEAL. JMHO.

Lou is so right. Use a good seal. Go to your CIH dealer and pay the price. It's so disheartening to have to re-splt a tractor you are already tired of working on. Jim

I would change it along with the frt transmission seal as well. Had the clutch replaced in my pickup a few years ago and took both seals along with a new slave cylinder. Told the guy I wanted it all replaced regardless. His worker was smarter than me and just put all the new parts on the frt seat. 6 months or so later, I had a rear main leaking. Shop had to do it all over again. Gave them a new clutch in case the one had oil on it. This time the labor bill was for 1 hour (what I "saved" on the last labor bill by the seals not being replaced.
