OT: KENMORE WASHER

Clothes are coming out of washer very wet, as if the belt is slipping and not coming up to full speed in the spin cycle. Took a look see and there is no belt, just a black rubber coupler between the motor and gear box. There are signs of rubber pieces around the coupler. My question, Is the rubber coupler a clutch? Can you tighten it or do I need to replace it?

Thanks, George

Hi George,

Fix the water pump first then see where your at. Strings get wrapped around the pump shaft adding resistance to pumping. Most likely will need a new pump to cure the problem.

Coupler likely has enough internal wear that it does not transmit full power- ie, stripped inside.

If you got a little pile of rubber on the floor under that part of the machine, that's what you need. The coupler is just that, a coupler, a mini u-joint, if you will. Not a clutch. They're cheap to buy, about $15, usually not hard to put in either. Probably looks about like this:

Dad Burn it I forgot to say in search box look for dryer and when it opens type in serial number

T_Bone.
Before I purchase a new pump, I'll get a new washer. There is no water left in the tank.

If it is stripped, would I get it to spin and fully drain? I think it's time for Santa to bring a new one!

George,

The pump is binding while it's pumping thus is wearing out the coupler. Check the pump shaft in "free spin" mode and it should be very hard to turn thus proving my point.

Had the same problem with mine, replaced the coupler and got a couple extra years out of it before it sprung a leak somewhere else. The coupler is just like any other drive line part, it'll wear out just from normal use. Personally I'll t try a $15 part to see if that does the trick. If you're the type to buy a new truck 'cause a u-joint failed, then junk the washing machine by all means!

The coupler is just a basic Lovejoy. It either works or splits... so if yours still turns then the coupler is OK for now.
Have you tried a little smaller load in the washer? I've noticed that exceptionally large loads of work clothes have that problem but smaller loads work fine... Motor might be getting weak and not obtaining full speed... but smaller load works for now.

When I took mine out, what had happened was the plastic pins had sheared on one side of the coupling, but they were ok on the other side - so it just operated on friction at that point - under a light light load would work ok, but it wouldn't spin. Was a partial failure mode...

Been a long time but is there a spin clutch under the drum? That used to wear out. Servall used to have all information and usually a cut down machine to look at. Back when.

barn E is correct . there is a centrifical clutch that engages in the spin mode . thats your problem . about $30 . a whirpool part will work but sears won't tell you that .

NEBeef, The rest of the story is that the old washing machine is in the basement and I it is next to impossible to get it up the stairs. I'm in the process of putting a 26x26 addition on the house with a 8x14 bath. One end of the bath 3x8 is going to be a closet/laundry room with 3 ft doors. May fix the old machine someday for doing extremely dirty clothes, however I may get a new washer/dryer for the new laundry room and put into operation sooner than later. Thanks to all for your help. BTY, I never throw things away, I'm a Big pack rat. George

George - you're welcome.

A new addition probably deserves a new washer and dryer, lots of brownie points with the wife too, I'll bet!

Good luck with that addition, from one Pack Rat to another... :)
