Had a nice Thanksgiving despite a bit of stupidity

Went on a trip out to Eastern Pa ( Hanover area )
Wonderful dinner and 2 and a half days of visiting with our family out there.

Tuesday night just after dark I was helping my friend near here to haul some water in barrels from my house to his as his well went dry and he needed it for his horses.

We planned to leave wed around dinnertime for the 4 1/2 hour trip and all was well till I came up with the bright idea to pull my truck on a steep slope and just slide the barrels gently to the ground... well I had one barrel started out of the truck and the one beside it decided to unload itself and I had no control over it as it slid back off the liner onto the tailgate it hit the ridges or indentations on tailgate causing it to upend and land on my foot.
I have been to 2 hospitals one near me and the one in Gettysburgh, and both tell me just contusions no breaks ?? still hurts like a Son.. Oh well ya got the idea.

Thats nasty. Keep ice on it. Cold reduces swelling, heat deminishes it. Hope if feels better for you.

Feeling slightly better but the toes are really itchy.... Doc said use ice then warm compresses.
The ball area is hard to put any weight on it especially in the mornings.

sure did just glad it wasn't a 480 pound bride I was carrin cross the threshold , but she may have been softer than the edge of a plastic barrel full of water. I do believe with the ground having moisture and the plastic barrel saved my foot as the impression of where it hit you could see it landed directly on the foot and pushed it into the ground.

Also, keep it elevated as often as you can. If you try to stay on your feet, it's going to take a lot longer to get better. No home remedies for the pain though (Grandma passed away in 1956, and I was too young to get her liquor recipe). I don't drink, so I'm ok without it anyway. Main thing, keep an ice pack on it as was mentioned, insulate it with a wash cloth so as not to put ice directly on skin, and sit with your foot propped up.

This may sound strange but try putting some Ben-Gay or other type of muscle relief cream on it ((I only use the BG regardless of the smell but figure any type would probably work)). I don"t remember how I made the "discovery" but I figured out years ago that the heat from heating action does something to help the pain somewhat and also stimulates blood flow to the area to help make the bruising go away. No guarantees on it working for something that bad but when your in pain anything is worth a shot...

Reminds me of the time a buddy of mine and I had a house trailer on the beach in NC. We had a floating dock floating on eight 55 gallon drums in front of the trailer.

One time we were changing the drums when I was distracted by a neighbor gal in a bikini and dropped a water logged, barnacled up 55 gallon on my foot and cut up several toes.

Even the doctor couldn't keep a straight face while he fixed up my toes.

Don't mean to take anything away from your situation. That must hurt like heck.

Same thing happened to me when a cast wheel center off my JD 50 fell on my foot like that. Still don"t see how nothing broke. Limped for almost three weeks.

Might try soaking it in warm water with epsom salts. No guarantees though! Check the internet for some suggestions too. I use Bing.com, but most any search engine (Google, etc.) will work.

Years ago, was hammering and, of course, hit my thumb...stepfather, an old cowboy, filled a glass with "coal oil" (kero) said to hold thumb in it for 10-15 min. Hilarious old wives remedy...
The next day the thumb was swelled, felt thick and about half numb, turned pretty dark, but no pain or discomfort at all, could use it/work normally, cleared up in 3-4 days (and, yes, it's still there, working).
Don't know if it would've worked for a foot or not...then, there're people who swear by DMSO...

Hi Roy,

About 20yrs ago my foot looked something like that but the dark color extended about 3" higher toward the ankle then slid down to the toes. Crushed all the bones in my foot that exposed the nerves inside the bone. The foot never did heal up and still looks some what like it did 20yrs ago with swelling 1/3 larger than my normal foot.

Pain pills (including morphine) didn't help with the pain. Ice water baths about drove me nuts but helped the most when I can with stand the pain from the ice water.

The best thing I ever did was [b:613a02238b]NOT[/b:613a02238b] let them operate as it turned out I have RSD that can't be fixed from any external means. RSD= permanent nerve damage.

Glad it wasn't a metal barrel that landed on your foot.

Keep it in/on ice and elevated; Jack Daniels is my recommended internal medicine for that type of injury.

Might consider a pair of steel towed boots under the Christmas tree.

Hope your foot starts feeling better.

James I believe yer right about the Jack Daniels.
I haven't drank in 30 years. Doc wanted to give me crutches I said it I had to learn to drive em I'd be back in very soon , so I opted for a cane.

I had 1 bud light Thanksgiving night and remembered why I didn't like the taste of Beer in cold weather and felt a little woozy for a few min. A pony bottle or can is enough for me on a hot day and cold as can be and chug it . tastes good that way.( other than that I nurse it and the warmer taste I can barely handle)

I guess its because dad always kept a case in the back cellar and I did at times tried to sneak one when I was young .. Ugh !! Tasted like a skunk smells.

Some say I drink Ladies drinks , but a good Blackberry brandy and 7 up I can handle for Christmas in moderation of coarse.

I'm glad it wasn't a metal barrel too, bet we wouldn't be looking at those toes.

Funny thing was when I retired I said I'd never where another pare of steel toes all tennies for me

Yes old Ben is a good remedy.
I have been soaking it in Epsom Salts There is a new one out Spearmint flavor and when I take my foot out feels like I have "Icy Hot" on it kinda soothing .

I'm not so sure about JD for pain relief. Several years ago my back hurt so bad when I laid down that I couldn't sleep for several nights in a row. I could sleep in a chair, but only got a few hours of sleep. I decided that Jack Daniels might help me get a good night sleep. I drank a bunch in the evening. My kids still joke about their 'drunk' father. I did manage to get to sleep (of course!), but at about 2 am I woke up totally sober with the pain in my back back! Whatever was wrong did eventually correct itself.

Still, Old Roy, that foot looks awful. I hope you have a speedy recovery and am glad it was nothing more serious.

I've seen that before and know exactly what's wrong. Your belts too tight and your shoes are too small. Loosen your belt one notch, or maybe two and get a new pair of shoes, one or two sizes bigger. A big bowl of ice cold fruit coctail too. You need one of them too. Do those three things and you'll be good as new eventually.

YOUCH!!! That sure looks sore. That swelling looks a bit much. Beside the bruising, and I aint no doctor, but that swelling looks bad. They say its ok though, so ok then I guess.

That really does look bad though. Ouch. Good luck getting better, and don't forget the ice cold bowl of fruit coctail. Won't help your foot, but will taste good.
