Tanning a cow hide

Does anybody have any experience tanning a cow hide? Is it something I can do myself or should I have it done for me. If I have it done for me about how much does it cost. I want to make it into a rug. Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks

Joe

My Mother must have known for when I was young she used to tell me often she would "tan my hide" Unfortunately she has passed.

"Tanning hides" into the search engine, there are items on it, also videos.

Go over to "kountry life" and see if you can raise WillyN, he's often written about his daughter, who does tanning.

Do a web search there are a number of company's that sell kits for tanning hides. My son got a kit years ago and did a deer hide and it came out pretty good

I have tanned several deer, coon and beaver hides. The most work is hide preparation by scrapping and cleaning, other then that it is pretty easy to do the rest. I ordered the tanning compound from a catalog that sold tanning supplies, forget the name but I think Cabelas bought out the company and the company is located either in North Dakota or Minnesota.

I tanned a couple bobcats by streching them out on plywood and covering them with salt. That would be alot of salt for a cow hide I guess, but it worked pretty good.

Old time tanneries used (Red, I believe) Oak bark to make a solution to soak the hides in. Used so much bark that they sometimes had to move to another location ,because they had stripped all the bark off in that location.
I used to have the directions copied from a magazine, but lost them.Maybe Field & Stream in the early 50s.

Check Tandy Leather Factory online. They used to carry a tanning kit. Daughter tanned a bunch of deer hides one time. Made a vest, skirt, and other items, for a 4-H project. Turned out nicely.
Had to pre punch holes and hand sew, as sewing machine wouldn't do the job.

send it to a tannery, beef hides need thinned in some spots to tan right, i've done lots of small hides and if done right it's a ton of work....do a small hide and you'll soon know if you want to tackle a big hide

had 1000 lb. bulls hide last year by local man for $300. Local Mennonites wouldn"t do it. Suspect you"re better off to hire it done.
