After cruising along and getting harvest out of the way it seems we have been able to keep busy as always.

Very few acres see a moldboard plows these days. We seem to plow a few acres every year. I enjoy it. Got rained out this afternoon with about 5 minutes of work left to do.

We have always called these "sea gulls". They always seem to come around when we plow. Anybody know what they really are called?

DSCN4167.jpg

Wrigley woke up from a nap and was VERY interested!

We have spent alot of time with the cattle since harvest.

In the background of the picture you can see a little bit of the new fence we built. Some it board fence and there is also over half a mile of new woven wire just out of the picture. We have lots of good neighbors and they always stop in to visit, unless we are building fence! Guess they were afraid I would put them to work.
There are also 14 bred 4 year old cows in the pic that I bought earlier this month.

Just to keep things interesting Pioneer came sunday morning at 6am to haul some of our beans to the plant in Woodhull for processing. If you are planning on planting 93y60 beans next year, this could be them headed your direction. Wonder how much that grain vac set up cost?

One perk to being on the farm everyday is I get the opportunity to enjoy many sunrises just like this one.

Our biggest commitment these days is feeding cattle. This is where we start out every morning. This is our feed bunker. A pile of processed corn stalks, processed hay, and gluten. There are two bags of silage directly opposite of the bunkers. Its primitive but seems to work, at least so far.

DSCN4113.jpg

This in Nick processing a bale of hay into the bunker. As you can see it will make the 4020 snort a little.

DSCN4144.jpg

We feed the cows a mix of hay, corn stalks, gluten and silage. Everything gets dumped in the mixer and then I drive over to feed the cows.

DSCN4156.jpg

The cows are feed every morning in a stalk field. I think 33 likes the feed!

DSCN4199.jpg

We weaned and vacinated calves last thursday so they are up in the main lot and fed in the bunks twice a day. They are getting hay, silage, gluten and a supplement. Seems as they are getting over being away from mom pretty quickly.

Of course ALL of this happens under the watchfull eye of our mascot. Wrigley works from sun up till sundown but once we hit the house at dark he is out like a light!
Well thats whats going on around here.
What have all of you been up to? Somebody out there has got to have some fun project!

went to the steel mill and got about 80 tons of slag for the road in . spread it about 500 feet that only leaves another 3000 ft to go . ok, maybe we won't get it all done this month but we'll just keep chunking at it .

This is the project I'm working on, a 50x50 paver patio with a couple of small ponds, a fire pit, hot tub and arbor. 63,000# of wall stone and pavers. I hope to have all the stone work done by Christmas, the water features and plants will get done as soon as winter quits.

I don't have pictures, but I am finishing a basement kitchen in the 'high rent' district of town! Their media room sports a 65" HD 3D flat panel which appears to run about $4K! I have often been able to discourage time consuming, specialty add ons by stating that anything is possible, if you have the money-the problem here is they have the money, so now just make it happen! Greg

Look like either a "herring gull" or possibly a "ring-billed gull" (one looks like it has the black ring around its bill). I usually refer to them as s*** hawks! They love eating whatever a plow turns up. Keep the pics coming; always enjoy them.

Yup, seagulls. Was riding with sister-in-law a couple weekends ago while she was chisel plowing with a big CAT tracked tractor, and 13 foot chisel plow (plowing at least a foot deep.) Lots of seagulls flocking in the field.
Never used to see them around here, now they"re all over the place and we"re in Central MIchigan - no seas around here!

We"ve created a new breed of scavengers - McDonald"s parking lot clean up crew!

Good to see your pictures Bill, I sure miss the fulltime farming and like most people I don't take enough pictures.(I don't think my sheep are as photogenic as your cows/calves let alone Wrigley). Like you I have had some fencing to do,getting some anchor posts set and also fixing some tile....maybe my daughter will show me how to post some pics, Bob

Thanks for the pictures Bill - Been wondering what you were up to! Travis didn't take you to the plow day at Galesburg?

You prolly didn't see it, but it was great to see the Illini play Northwestern at WRIGLEY Field. I just happened to watch the game as I had the flu this weekend - First time in 43 years for football (I think).

Let me know when you and the Travis boys have time some Saturday to get together at the Warehouse for a burger.

Jim

I was busy when they had the plow day of course but got to see pics. I didnt see the football game at wrigley but I DID listen to it on WIRL(they have all the Illini broadcasts) in the tractor while plowing untill it got dark and they cut their power down. The pics of the game I saw on the net were really cool. First game since the Bears last played there in 70. Actually Northwestern had played Illnois at wrigley back in 1923 I believe. They talked about it several times. I checked about a month ago, they still have great food at the Warehouse. Looking forward to that. Ever try their pizza? Very good!

Bill, Love the pics, here is one of my fall project, actually the contractor is doing most of the work now, I did all the excavating for it myself with a Case 580D.

they're sea gulls all rite...dont know the species...nasty birds...i lived in Port Bolivar for awhile and worked in Galveston...coming home in the evenings on the ferry all the tourista would be throwin bread and crackers to the gulls...usually 4or 6 would get crapped on...makes a boring trip a lil more fun lol

Sheep shed was completed last week, just in time for our first snow (gave us 2"); 12x14 lean-to wood shed is complete minus tin roofing; down here in Thunder Bay getting all sorts of medical/physical/drug/lung tests today for the new job starting December 2; another 12" snow in the last 2 days and I've still got to float my JD 1630 back to the farm to mount chains and snowblower; hopefully loading the truck with straw and the trailer with hay and heading back north; snowblowing out the winter drive once I get there with the load.

Wife and I took a ride on one of those ferries last week going towards Galveston. It was neat to see the dolphins jumping around.

Haven't heard from you in a while, been wonderin' what you and W were up to.

Glad to see harvest is done and W is still supervisin'.

They are Sea gulls, don't think they only stay by the sea. They are here at the tip, 100 miles from the ocean. Where there is food, they go,but how do they find it.?

Supervisor Wrigley on the job as usual.
