Our company is looking to expand our offerings in Residential Wind Turbines especially in the 10-20K units. I have been coresponding with a fellow in the UK about his companies WINFORCE turbines. He came over to the States Nov 15th to meet with some of us here who expressed intrest. He started his US treck in Texas, then to Cal., Colarado, then to Mass. and to here today and tomarrow. Today I took him out to the sites where I have installed residential units, and then up to Little Falls where the Comercial wind farm is going up. The crews are working 7 days a week. They were lifting a blade off a transport while we were there.
Tomarrow we are visiting a site 4 miles from my house that has a 10K Redriven Unit in place. I didn't install it and thus far our little 2.4K Skystreams have been outperforming it. From there weare going to SUNY Morrisville to talk with The heads of their renewable energy dept. about doing the national dealer training for these units there.

I guess now I know where all the wind turbine parts are going. Been lots of them heading up state route 8 for months.

They might not be cost effective. They might be another huge government boon-doggle building the grid to support them. They might have serious consequences for nearby animals and the environment. But they sure do improve the appearance of the landscape, don't they?

Drill here. Drill now.

Without goverment money those companies would fold up tomorrow. It's mostly a high profit money making scam.

7-10 years on most residential sites that I have installed turbines on. Some sites that were poorly evaluated Never!! Out of every 20 people who call me wanting to put up a wind turbine maybe one site is good, a couple fair, the rest poor. The pour sites I sugest Solar PV rather than wind, and encurage those with decent sites to put in a hybrid wind/Solar system if the budget allows. My job as a salesman is very flustrating, because I talk to customers who want to buy and I end up telling them why they shouldn't if they are looking to wind energy for financial gain only. Wind energy is a viable means of reducing ones energy bills, but by taking simple steps to reduce consumption often costs nothing and reduces your energy bills as much as investing in renewables. That being said, if you do both you may have no bill at all, other than the cost of the equipment which is supplemented greatly by the state and federal gov. tax breaks, and grants. More and more people here are thinking in this direction. I'm amazed at how many off gridders that I have met in the last two years.

Im with you Tom, just can,t see my tax money being spent to help some project like that. Once the government gets out of it things will probably change. Jerry in Tenn also

I just saw where a local company has a contract to produce huge gearboxes for wind turbines. Something like a 100M over 12 years.

Tom, you have a valid point as far as our countries Electrical Highway. Thats why I promote Residential energy production. NO transmission lines needed, NO carbon footprint, other than mfg. TOTAL Electrical energy independance if desired.
As far as senery goes, they look muck better than abandon dairy farms and decaying barns and silos. With the money that the remaining land owners get from leases, and the tax revenews that will come to local municipalities, maybe some of them can survive. This area was once the hub of the Industrial Revolution in this country. We had all the energy from our many rivers and streams, we had timber' Fur, fertile soil and the work force to turn these raw materials in to lumber to build buildings, turn grain into flower, and pelts into clothing, seat cushions for buggies to modle Ts, and fine furnature. On top of that the Erie Canal gave us the means to ship to sea ports to the east and west to the Great Lakes. Now we have empty scheletons of factories, abandon farms and land growing up to weeds. Since this country has abandon the American Worker and American Farmer we might as well grow Wind Turbins on the land, at least we can say that our electricity is Made In The USA. Up State NY to be exact. What you want for Tenn. is up to you

Guy here has windfarms and got 104 million in Federal Stimulus funds. Not tax credits! 104 million of your tax dollars! I'm sure it is just a coincidence his brother is Congressman Carnahan. They claim they are helping us out. I'm still waiting on my 104 million. What about you.? Kind of turned me against wind turbines in general.

I'd like to see a spreadsheet detailing the cost/return ratio of the stuff you are so proud of.

Don't get me wrong, if it's the real deal I applaud what you are doing!

THANK YOU, My question was purely for personal knowledge and I was not trying to open a can of worms.

Used to put up very tall bucket elevators. How I miss being able to climb, and work at heights!!!!!!!!!!!!

Rural electrification didn't pencil out either and electric utility companies would not put up wires out into the country until some government incentive was enacted. When the incentives went away did it all fold up?

Thats an honest person right there. There two dishonest salesperson for every honest on I think.

They can work very well in a lot of apps, we have some very windy coastal areas here. If the trees can't grow and the shrubs are stunted because the wind it too strong, its probably a good spot for a turbine!

Those windy costal areas are fine, unless it's Marthas Vineyard, and then the Kennedy's and other rich folks dont want to mess up their view.

I will rather pay for wind costs compared to a rag head that I will have to pay again tomorrow and the next day.

They may also be hard on the eyes, but so was silos, RR tracks, Gravel roads, man made lakes, tall buildings--and my mother in law.

We still probably pay for oil companies, planes, RR, water traffic, power plants etc. But it seems like if done right, it is a step in the right direction.

My question; Considering the initial cost, how long they will run before needing major maintenance, and how much maintenance will cost, are they really efficient??? How long before break-even, and how long until major maintenance cost?
Tim

I'm in favor of wind power....but... the wind
doesn't blow all the time, and we'll still need
fossel fuel power plants for when there's no
strong wind.
I wish I could afford solor cells, wind turbine,
and battery backup. But those things, like the
new General motors VOLT electric car, at over
$20'000, are out of reach of the average family.
