Ford Oil Filter adapters

I have a cartridge type oil filter on my Ford 861 tractor and decided to buy a kit to where I could use the Spin on type oil filter. I removed the screw out tap that fits in the block and tried to put the new adapter piece through rhe block and it screws in good for 2 turns and then tightens up to where you can"t even turn it. Has anyone out there had the same problem and will it hurt the block to turn it on into the block. I don"t want to damage anything.

It's been a while since I've done one of those, but it seems to me some of the kits came with two of the screw-in adapters of different threads or possibly different sizes. Did your's come with more than one? What make is the kit?

The cartridge filter is much stronger.I put a conversion on a Ford car in the 50s.A stone hit the corner of the new filter and caused an oil leak.I wont have one on my tractor.

Both of them leak an equal amount of oil onto the side of the block when you change the filter. If one were better than the other I would change over for that reason.

I would bet that the adaptor you are trying to put in is the wrong thread pitch. Carefully compare it to the one you took out. If you have a thread gauge it is easier. If you have a set of taps & dies they usually have one in them. If you try to force in the wrong thread pitch you will ruin the threads in the block.

You are screwing the correct side of the adaptor into the block?? Both sides are threaded. One is for the filter and the other is for the block. Different thread pitches.

The one that got hit by a stone had a case that was .010 thick. On a tractor stones from a loader, roots from plowing or sticks in the woods can start a leak in these filters. Some times old is better.I cant see any reason to put a beer can filter on a tractor.I put my drain pan under the filter.A little oil on my block wont hurt anything. My tractor is a worker.Filter elements are still available, they were used in Ford cars and trucks.

I tried it without the plate and it lacked 1 thread of going in all the way--after I added the rubber washer it didn"t have to go in all the way to tighten the plate next to the block ,so it worked fine. My tractor never did leak a drop of oil and with the new adapter was put on , I drove it about 15 minutes and no leaks so far. I"m sure the old cartridge type filter may have been better but it was a dog to change. Thanks to you guys for the imput.
