3020 diesel 12 volt starter

I have converted my 1968 3020 diesel to 12 volts and an alternator years ago. Instead of buying a starter at the time I had a local starter shop change the starter to 12 volts. Now after several starter rebuilds over the years I need to replace the starter. Would the best starter be the Denso 12 volt? I think based on the confusing Deere info the last starter offered as a 12 volt starter for a tractor converted to 12 volts is the TY6701 or now the SE501444 reman which I believe is a Delco starter. If you go to the 123000 up serial numbers the Denso 12 volt starter appears to be the TY6713, currently the SE501414 reman. Also Deere shows the TY6710 (subs to SE501446 reman) which I believe is a Delco. I don't necessarily intend to buy a Deere reman based on price, but I want to get the best starter for this tractor and since I am used to figuring out the Deere part first I went this route to figure out what to do.

An ordinary Delco 37MT or maybe even a 42MT should just bolt right on.
This 4KW Denso would likely work too. Code 3004 w/ Safety Cap On 12Volt 4.0KW RE59589 228000-4601
Get a $15 destroker for the hydraulic pump when at it.
Plus some HD 2/00 battery cables.
Bolt the chassis (-) connection to the starter mounting stud. Instead of to some sheet metal or the block somewhere.

When I last worked as a Deere mechanic, we fooled around - trying out the Nippos instead of the Delcos. Overall, no big gain. The Nippos lasted longer when overheated and abused - but cost MUCH more to fix or replace.

The Delcos are pretty good starters WHEN in good shape. Rebuilt Delcos usually not near as good - especially if the armatures have been cut and resurfaced. Makes them overheat much faster. Rebuilt starters just about always have cheap aftermarket parts, used armatures, etc.

If I needed a starter, I'd buy new - not something called "rebuilt."

Something like this for $250:

Note that even if you buy direct from Delco - they will sell you a starter made in China. That being said, I've had zero problems with Chinese new starters.

When I do one I insist on a starter that a 4440 had a Nipp. Did a 12 volt conversion on a 3010 and came with a gear reduction. I didn't care for it but the customer was pleased, until 2 years later the nose cone of the starter was wedged between the flywheel and clutch housing. This starter had an aluminum nose cone. So guess what starter was put on next?? chris
