O/T Automotive paint trivia.........

On another thread, I mentioned I had once gone to Sherwin Williams' factory automotive paint school.

One of the instructors at the school mentioned that when the various automobile manufacturers come out with new paint colors, they do not freely divulge the formula for each color to the various aftermarket paint manufacturers, DuPont, Sherwin Williams, Martin Senour, et al, for repair work on the vehicles. It's up to each paint manufacturer to analyze the color and develop a formula to match.

Then when a color is developed to match the factory's color, the responsibility for approval of the match rests on 17 to 22 year old girls. Why? Out of the entire human race, it's been deterimined that young females have the most accurate perception of color.

They say all males are color-blind to some extent, however slight. Even females may start losing perception of color as they approach their late 20's. So, the manufacturers use the young ladies for their ability to percieve color, and then put them on a path upwards in the company, if they're interested.

I know some of ya'll have laid awake nights wondering about that.

If'n you've ever watched a bevy of young ladies in the drugstore checking out all the colors of makeup, and managing to differentiate between 1500 shades of tan, and telling the difference when applied to not quite so similar shades of natural skin tones on other girls' faces, you know that's true.
As far as laying awake at night, at my age, I'm just too tired.

I wonder in some sort of optical scanning by computer wouldbe more accurate? Who knows. Thanks for the interesting post.

The computer might be more accurate, and is probably essential for analyzing and calculating the proper "recipe", but you never let a computer be your final approval.

They do have scanners that can break down the color, but a human eyeball still has the final say.

I repair boats most of which are painted with auto paint. The local PPG guy comes to the shop with a scanner that spits out a formula to mix paint to match for repainting the repair. It is amazingly accurate. That or my old male eyeballs aren't that sensitive.

I work at an OEM paint facility. We paint door handles mirrors and trim parts for Toyota Ford GM.and some smaller corp. We use Sherwin Williams, Akzo Nobel,US Paint and Red Spot paints. For color check we use an x-rite scanner but just gets you close. For the perfect color match we look at the master and the part in a Macbeth color booth this is the standard light that all oem use. The people that check color including myself are tested with hue color samples yearly. I am an old male.
