cornputer problem

DSL service. Upon getting on net it was really slow and kicked me off within 5 minutes and won"t reconnect to net. This desktop works fine for other functions. Have another desktop & laptop operating off same router that connect fine to the net.
Have tried obvious stuff like unplugging it all and reconnecting all and wiggling wires in back.
Sure could use some suggestions. You folks have helped me out with other stuff many times. Thanks in advance. Pete
 

Might not be your end that has the problem. I've had the same problems from time to time, and it was always an issue with some of the equipment at my service provider. Give them a call.
 
RustyFarmall, Don't think it would be problem with provider, since my other desktop and laptop operate fine on the net off this router. Pete
 
Do you have a spare modem that you could try? If it isn't your computer or ISP I would look at swapping modems and cables that you know are good.
 
could be the network interface in the computer. Most computers have this built on the motherboard, you can buy a new network interface card and install it, I do not know what they cost. not hard to install but you might have to disable the network interface on the motherboard.

The NIC card (network interface card) also called ethernet adapter, could be failing, but I suspect that there is an issue with the computer. Check the CPU use during operation with the system monitor capability (sys7 or vista) or the control alt delete with XP) this might show continuous CPU use when idle. If it does it could be a virus, worm, malware, or other software issue, or it could be internal connection or fault. Reseat the memory chips in the Mother board first if it is heavy CPU use. Jim
 
The woman of the house got if figured out for me. Don't know what she did but I do know she has a lot more patience with this sort of thing than I do. It was something simple. Thanks for the suggestions. Pete
