Someone the other day was talking about big trees. I think some of the biggest around here are usually the sycamores by the river and creeks or the cottonwoods. This was a really big soft maple that was cut down and I put on our pile to get ground up. It was big, close to 5' across.

That is a big maple, most of ours are 2' or less. There is a white oak on my farm that is over 6' at shoulder height and I have several red oaks that are around 4'. I've got a neighbor that has a cottonwood that is registered as one of the biggest in Arkansas, I can't remember but I believe it's over 9' at shoulder height

My brother took a pic of our Zmower parked parrell behind a huge silver maple, you could hardly see the mower. I forgot to bring my camara and tape measure on tuesday, so I could post it on here. Why are you gonna grind up that stump, no use for firewood? J

That is huge for a soft maple. None on my place that big. Most get rotton in the middle for they get very big. Lots of heat in the stove right there.

Around here, there's a lot of other wood that's easy to get for firewood and burns better. Oak, mulberry, ash, etc. I have a landscaping business and we bring a lot of ornamental tree branches back from pruning and whole trees also. Crabapple, dogwood, redbud and pear make up a lot of my smaller firewood. Softwood and other wood no good for splitting gets turned into mulch then sold the following spring. Nothing gets wasted that's for sure, I'm too tight!

this is a pix of a buddy and his daughter standing in front of the Sitka Spruce that used to be the largest one in North America. It was about 70 miles west of Portland OR, till a big storm took most of it down.

That's a big one for sure.
I used to own a little house in so Minneapolis that had two giant Silver Maples in the back yard.
They were healthy when I sold the place. Then about 5 years later I drove by the place and saw that they were both gone. I'm glad they lasted while I owned it. To remove two huge trees from a crowded urban lot would probably have required a second mortgage.
