JD 530 starting problems

I have a JD 530 that I have a very hard time starting. This summer I would crank it for awhile, it would start to smell like it was flooded, I would wait a little bit come back and it would start right up. Now I might get a little pop right as I crank the engine but that is it. Any ideas, is it a carburetor problem? I am getting good spark and just changed the spark plugs. Any ideas would be appreciated as I inherited the tractor from my father and don"t know much about it.

Points and condenser been replaced lately?Sounds like it could use a good tune up. How many hours on the tach? Might need the valves ground. A compression check would confirm this.Fresh gas might also help the starting.I am looking for a 530 to make look like new again, if you might be interested in selling it.My e-mail is open.

I would go along with the fresh gas. I asked the same thing about stale gas in an Oliver 70 yesterday. Got the question answered for me. I went back out to the shop and the float was stuck and leaked all the old gas out. I put a couple of gallons of new gas in it,started it and let it run for a half hour or so. This morning,I pulled out the choke and hit the starter button. It fired right up.

One of the main problems with the 530 is that people want to open the throttle up to start them. You should leave the throttle pulled all the way back till it starts. Also not to much choke. I have one that it can sit a month and if you give it any choke at all it is flooded.

I second the fresh gas. It seemed like gas would last forever when I was a kid. Any more, after a month or so without treatment, it's lost it's pop. I put StaBil in all of the farm gas I buy, even my old pickup.

There's probably a drain on the carb that will allow you to get the old gas out, or you could siphon it faster.

4 things an engine needs to run, spark, fuel, compression, and air. check all of those things and you will fine your problem!
