Hey Guys,

Is there anyone out there using the backup utility in Win XP Pro?

I can usually figure these things out on my own, but this joker kinda has me stumped.

I want to schedule a backup every day and just amend the file with the daily changes. Okay, fine.

Do I have to leave that app open and running so it will run at the appointed time?

Can't get 'er to take the cue with the clock and start again. Maybe I shouldn't be closing the utility?

Thanks,

Allan

i'm having the same problem with XP...i can manually do a backup and save it but never have gotten it to do one on auto pilot...thats all coming to a end anyhow...got a new mystery box with 7 in it...been sitting on the bench for almost a month till i get pysched up enuff to plug it in...i hate learnin new pootereeze.

Allen,

gitrib's son here. Once you get to towards the end of the backup wizard, there should be the option to click on an advanced button. If you work through those options towards the end you should be able to schedule the backup.

You can also accomplish the same thing using the task scheduler. which is under all programs, accesories, system tools, scheduled task. Probably easier to use the schedule utility in the advanced mode of the backup utility.

send Dad an email on the side and I can send you the screen shots on how to do this.

Okay,

Got it, (I think).

It shows up in the scheduler anyways. Will see if it pops on tomorrow morning at the proper time as it should.

So, I don't have to have that little backup utility open and running then? Does it just run in the background 'er something?

Thanks Pard; you're a goodun.

The funny thing about the task scheduler is that if the app it is supposed to run is already open it will not do anything. You definatly have to exit the backup utility.

You bet he is a goodun He rides herd on a whole bunch of computers at Oklahoma State University. I was lucky when I ask him to help out. His usual answer is, "You can't afford me. I am sure that that just runs in the back ground has he has mine set do a lot of thing on time.
gitrib

Yeah, that would make sense. I appreciate the info.

"Think" I've got it figured out. I wasn't going into the drive and checking off what folders to back up. Nothin' there chosen to back up so it just didn't do anything.

I really appreciate you guys helping me out. Always an answer on here if ya just take the time to ask. :>)

Thanks again,

Allan

Plug 'er in. You're really gonna like that Win 7. Takes an initial bit of getting used to, but the silly thing does everything behind the curtains and it's kinda an automatic system.

I really like it.

On the XP back up dealy; ya have to check off the folders that need to be backed up. If ya don't go in there and manually put a check mark next to the folders, then "save the settings" (under job), it will dump your (schedualed)backup when ya exit the program. Also, make sure it is set to "daily" or whatever.

If the schedualer sees nothing chosen to do, it just sits there and doesn't do anything. :>(

Really Allan? I can't think of a good thing to say about Seven. There's a grand opening of a new MAC store about an hour from me today so I'm heading over there. I figure if I need to relearn Windows, or rather how Windows no longer works, and replace most of my peripheral hardware to make Seven kind of sort of work, I may as well go out the cost of a MAC and never look back. In addition to myself, in my job there are a lot of applications that I need to go into behind the scenes for 9-1-1 systems that I won't be able to go into anymore with Seven, so I hope those manufacturers get it right, because Seven is going to be a disaster. I had one of those guys tell me how much he loved Seven on his personal PC, so I asked him how it was going to function in some of the 9-1-1 functions, and he stood back and thought about because until then he hadn't thought beyond his personal PC and admitted that there are problems on the horizon.

If I ever see Bill Gates, I intend to drop a wheel weight on his feet, and I hope he'll be wearing sandals at the time.
