Linseed oil

We have a 50 ft. trailer that we want to put linseed oil on. Does anyone have an idea about how much we need to get? Also, do we want raw or boiled?

Boiled for sure, and about 4 gallon will do it. I added a quart of black paint to a gallon of linseed oil mixed it up good and put it on with a 4 inch brush. Gives the trailor floor a good look when it drys. Bandit

You would want raw, I believe. Raw is a lot cheaper. Kettle boiled is used as a finish. It dries to a gloss for things like gun stocks. For a trailer that is out in the weather, you don't want the wood to dry out. That is normally the reason for treating with Linseed oil. A gallon of good latex paint covers about 500 sq. ft. I would estimate that it would take about 4 times that amount for Linseed oil if the wood is dry.

If you want to use this as protective coating you should thin boiled oil with pure gum turpetine 30-50% this will drive the oil in and help it dry. If the wood is new let it get wet at least once and dry b4 you treat it. This is to open the pores of the wood so it will soak in. Also new planed lumber has what is called a mill glaze that seals the pores. My dad used this formula on everything outdoors as long as I can remember it worked very well.

I just finished a 20 x 8 foot trailer. The floor had gotten pretty dry. I put on 2 coats thinned only half as much the instructions. It took 1 gallon linseed oil. Looks good, we'll see how long it lasts.

This is in a drop deck van trailer that has had lacquer on it. I'm going to sand it down and then use the linseed oil. Is there a method I should use or just put it on there?

Took a gallon to spray down a 16x8 foot hay wagon with one endgate. Had thinned it with about a quart of mineral spirits. Could have used more. Applied it with a hand garden sprayer.

be very carefull with linseed oil we use it at work to treat door skins so we end up wearing alot of it ourselves peoples cloths hampers have benn known to ignite themselves so we always take our cloths off and throw then right in the washer when we get home also we bake the skins in a kiln if you wait too long before baking the the skins go up in flames also once its baked its ok though

Raw linseed oil will take a VERY long time to dry. It will accumulate and hold dust and dirt. Put used raqs in a closed metal container away from any combustibles.
