I just got this from a "potential buyer" for a junker MF35 Deluxe I've got for sale. The writing is pretty bad quality - this guy(or girl or in-between) needs to find a friend that speaks American English.

That's why I hide my email on craigslist. I put my phone number in and so far this has stopped the scammers.

Other than the wording, where's the scam?

He is letting the certified check clear before pickup and not asking for any money back.

I'd sell it to him.

Gary

i got almost the same email word for word one time from three different buyers. the only difference was in mine, they were having a medical problem and couldnt pick the item up, so there certified check was including the haulers fee and i was to pay him. yeah right. i reported all and forwarded the emails to moderators. im glad you brought this up, as it may help someone else. always beware if the person cant pick up, or view item personally. if they wont communicate by phone. if they offer a holding bonus. certified checks and money orders can be fake, always verify at a local bank before accepting, if the check is real, the person will go with you, if its fake, they will get ------ and leave. hope some of this helps somebody.

John;
He does say "after check is cashed" he will send shipper to pick up tractor. You've got the tractor, and you can't cash a check if the sender doesn't know who to send it to and where. Sounds like you are in control to me. There is no attempt to get money from you, didn't ask for a bank account # or anything other than name and address. If you don't trust the sender take Nancy's advise, I,m sure they will appreciate the contribution, although the sender may be suprised to take shipment of a donkey though.

the scam is the order is fake, takes several days for the bank to get confirmation it then falls back on you , the one with the bank account,...i have one here that was sent to me and they really look real,.but the wording seems to be there downfall...

Don't worry Gary, The plot will thicken. Some start out this way and then unforeseen problems (Out of country and check gets lost) They can only issue one more check and want you to pay freight with money sent to you.
Later Bob

Your first clue that it is a scam is that they are avoiding the post office. There's no mail fraud involved if you use Fed Ex. The cashier's check is fake, but it may take a week or two before the bank comes back to you to make it good. Apparently cashier's checks don't clear nearly as fast as your personal check.
The check will be for more than you expected, so they will ask that you refund the difference - in cash. they have no intention of every picking up the tractor, they're just trying to convert some fake checks to real cash.

He didn't say anything about waiting for the check to clear. He said "cash." Big difference.

. . "once you have the check
cashed at your bank. . "

The way the scam usually works is . . . you get a certified check and bring it to your local bank. Bank will "cash" it. Later it will bounce and your bank will demand payment back ,for that check. Sometime in the middle of all this, the so-called buyer will ask for some money sent back to him. Often because he accidentally wrote the check to more then the purchase price, or some other nonsense.

Seems some people don't realize that certified checks can bounce and not always guaranteed.

You're right on fact of cleared, verses cashed, but John does have the tractor, and faces no obligation to deliver it to a shipper until he is comfortable with the deal.

I'd cash the check & hold the money for 3 or 4 weeks & if it was bad give the money back to the bank if not give the guy his tractor...whats the big deal?

Its a scam. I'm not sure how the person selling gets screwed but they do wants they chase the check. I'll have to check with my son but I know that when you cash the check you either have to pay money to the bank or they get into your banking someway. Just don't do it.

I went through with a similar scam on an engine, I got my cashiers check, but no bank in the area will cash it SURPRISE-SURPRISE. Anyway I have a $3000.00 check hanging above my computer, makes me feel rich everyday I look at it. LOL

My uncle fell for this on a sale for a 60K motor home,,, to make matters worst his wife retired from a bank,,, I told him to not let the MH go till he was sure the check was good,,, it took the bank over a week to confirm it was counterfeit.... No one ever showed up to pick up the MH,, we were wait'n...

A local guy was on the news and got caught up in a scam like this,,, he was receiving mechanized and forwarding it,,, he fell for some hooch on the net,,, I think he had handled 6 mil in goods brought this way so it does work...

He was pay'n the ship'n to the hooch and lost 40k,,, for a hooch he had never met,,, he was a married man....

I always like the ads for cars & motorcycles listed for sale in Wyoming, with palm trees in the background!

Based on what I experienced in trying to deal with you, you deserve all the jerking around and wasted time you get, and it still won't be enough.

My sister's father in law about fell for a scam like this last week. It was for an ATV that was selling below market value. At the last second he contacted my brother in law. My sis forwarded the emails between her FIN and the scammer. It was supposedly an ebay sale. I pointed out [b:b2cd585956]14[/b:b2cd585956] things that threw up red flags. These scams have been around a long time. I'm surprised people still fall for them. When selling remember cash is king!

JD, I have experienced simular replies from Craig's list ads.... One week I placed separate ads for a small scraper, a three point snowblower, a lawntractor and a Ford car... One clown responded to all four ads with the same identical response..
pressed delete x 4..

I have enjoyed the free use of Craig's list for some time, both buying and selling... I put my hometown area location and phone number in all my ads.. respondents can either call me or respond through the Craig's list ad.. I don't put my personal e-mail address in the ad either

In the meantime, you can lose a legitimate sale for the tractor...... And phone numbers/// I get the number of interested parties who call and plan to come and look over an item.. If the item sells, I give them a courtesy call to tell them the item is sold..
