IH 656d hydro

i was wondering if anybody could help me. I have an IH 656d Hydro and the transmission sounds like it slips under load in either forward or reverse. It seems to have a decent amount of drive when the hydro is cold. We took the bottom inspection plat off the bottom, and there was no brass shavings to be found. Does the flex drive plate on the engine have anything to do with it? also we took out the 4 valves in the center section and replaced the O rings. That helped a little bit.
Thanks, Frank

Hi Frank,

Ouch! That's the worst possible set of symptoms 'cause it "usually" means that the slip plates are groved, worn and letting drive oil leak by.

Now, you could "gamble", replace both the check valves down in the center section where you replaced the o-rings and just hope to high heaven that they are both bad ('taint the o-rings that fail anyway, but rather the checks themselves), but that's a pretty big "finger-cross". Last time I checked they were around $175 a pop and like I say, this is a huge stretch of faith.

No, when that flex plate goes, nothing else does, meaning she won't move a lick....... :>(

There are builders out there who can go in there; remove those plates, machine 'em down smooth again and you're right back in business. These guys are getting kinda scarce tho.

Most will just tell ya that you need a new transmission to the tune of some odd $6K.

Sorry fer the pessimistic opinion. How much does it "slip" anyway? Is it to the point of not wanting to move at all when it's hot?

Just this summer i was using a haybine and it pulled it pretty decent until i got to somewhat of a hill. You would have to slow the tractor down to almost 2mph to get up the hill. Then it would pull the bailer and wagon fine untill it got to the same hill. But this time it wouldnt make it up.

You're up in low range, right (stick forward)?

Hi range is "transportation" only (but you probably already knew this).

Stones, in Glenwood MN. will still machine hydro parts. They will rebuild one for $4700(this summer price). As long as your core is good they can fix it.

If it is the valve plates are those the ones in the Charge Pump? Also d can you just break off the front of the tractor to get to it or do you have to split it into 3 pieces?

The plates are between the hydro pump and center section and between the center section and the hydro motor. One steel and one brass plate in each location. The center section of the tractor has to be removed so the hydrostatic unit can be completely disassembled.

Oh heck no,

If that is the trouble, she's gotta come outta there.

Tractor is 50 years old and if it has never been touched, this very well could be the case.

Look on the bright side tho; if it were a standard transmission, it probably would have needed half a dozen clutches by now.
