Hydraulic lift quit workng, front and rear lifts

I tried to use my Ford 9N and the front bucket went up to its highest reach (10 feet). It would not come down manually. I shut it off and watched as it slowly lowered on it's own.

I changed the fluid and rinsed out the pump with diesel, pulling the 3 plugs underneath. The old fluid was pretty foamy. I had changed the fluid 3 years ago. The last time I changed the fluid I used the recommended Mineral oil for Fords. However this time the parts house said they had a new hydraulic oil I could use. It was Carquest 303 tractor fluid. The lady pointed out that it said "for Ford Tractors" on the 5 gal can. I took it home and poured it in. It seemed kind of light for hydraulic oil.

Well, now my bucket won't life and the rear 3 point hitch won't raise or lower. I hear the pump make that noise when I let the clutch out when everything worked and the bucket or rear hitch would raise. I can hear that noise now, but , nothing happens.

I noticed when I started it the first time the bucket raised all the way up, that there was a noise that sounds like a "shush-shush" coming from the vicinity of the water pump. The coolant level was good. I put the water pump on 3 years ago when I replaced the hydraulic oil. The noise sounded as if the water pump was going out.

Any ideas or help?

Thank you.

Do you have a seperate front-mount hyd pump for the loader? Does it have it's own resivor, or share the mid-tractor oil?

Or using the tractor belly pump for everything (less common)?

#1 get an I-T FO4 repair manual it explains how the system works and the adjustments you may need to do. If it is still the factory system it has no filter and the pump sits in oil. Sounds like your controls are not working as they should be plus you have a leak down problem which could be a weak relief valve or a blown gasket or a number of other things

What was the old oil like. i changed the oil in a fordson once and it was fairly milky & thick hadnt been done for years. Flushed it out replaced with new oil and the hydraulics & linkage where real slow to work & after half hour of runing they wouldnt operate. All we could put it down to was that the pump was worn and the new oil was to thin for the pump. Must have condensation or water back in there now as they have started working like they should just not game to have a look

first you have NO filter in the tractor and second you don't go to the barber to buy tires so why go to a auto parts store to buy oil for your tractor hyd system and just because it said Ford i will bet it;s the wrong spec. oil. you should be using 90 wt. mineral oil

Well, where I live, I am quite a distance from the nearest tractor dealorship/parts store.

The parts store in town carries all auto/pickup/tractor and farm implement parts, fluids...etc.

But, this afternoon my son and I went out and started the tractor. My son engaged the PTO and then both front and rear hydraulics began working. Why, I don't know. I never had to engage the PTO before, that I know of, to use either the front loader or the rear 3 pt hitch. I know thqt when I use the post hole digger I would raise the front bucket (loader), then turn the handle back the other way so that the bucket stayed up and the rear 3 pt hitch would work. Then, I would put on the post hole digger and engage the PTO and dig post holes.

As,d I said, I never had to engage the PTO to use the front loader.

When you go to get hydraulic oil for a older ford, you have to specify to the person you are buying it from that you want GL-1 90 Wt Mineral oil. I get mine from my local NAPA Store. It does not matter if it is a auto parts store or a tractor dealership. The person behind the counter won't know what oil you need. As for your problem with the hyd. take one of the side covers off and look inside to make sure the main spring that is attached to the control linkage and the back of the lift cylinder is still there. If not, with tractor not running feel around the bottom of the housing for it and hook it back in place.
