This is a picture of the potato digger taken earlier this fall. There is a front blade that runs under the suface of the soil and lifts the soil and potatoes onto a PTO-driven apron chain. The soil and small potatoes fall through the apron and the best potatoes are dropped off the rear onto the ground. From there, they are picked up by hand. The larger farms have virtually illiminated the hand work. this digger is from the 1950's I think.

That's a neat way to dig taters. My digger has a "D" handle.

Nice picture. We had one like that but was ground driven and on steel wheels. Sure worked easier than "D" style I got now.
 
That's why they let kids out of school for spud harvest here in Idaho. To pick up the potatoes. Nowdays it's 4 row harvesters and a fleet of 10 wheel trucks.

They still do this up here in Maine too but they're starting to cut back on the time as for most kids it's nothing more then a vacation.

I think my FIL's school is down to 2 weeks, it was always 3.

Now they just need people to run the equipment and drive the trucks.

Probably a throwback to the older horse drawn diggers. Sometimes a man used to ride the digger to watch and "walk down" the potato plant tops so they passed over the digger without lodging. Spent a lot of time picking up potatoes dug by a digger like that (ours was a JD.) Sure could use one for about 15 minutes tomorrow. Would end a lot of back work in my garden potato plot!

They ended "potato vacation" years ago around here, since farmers went over to harvesters. And there's a bunch of potatoes grown here in Montcalm county, Michigan....
