Land Clearing

Has anyone in the central Illinois area hired anyone to do land clearing? The web has a bunch of folks that provide this service in the SE and TX areas, but I can't find much in IL. It seems these forestry mulchers are just what I need to clear about 30 acres of 20 year old brush...

Some of the big mulchers charge $500 an hour!!! I think they do about an acre an hour depending on conditions. Dave

Depending on the size of the brush you might consider what we did. Had a guy with a 6' brush hog type mower on the front of a skid steer. He could cut up to about a 4" diameter tree, smaller if it was hardwood. The nice thing about his setup was that he could raise it up 10-12' in the air and start chopping up high then just bring it down and chew up the tree as he went. In one 8 hour day he was able to cover a lot of ground! Once he was done with that, I simply went and felled the rest of the larger trees by hand. I did have the use of a neighbor's skidder so that helped out a lot.

Now that was fun!!

In this area the brush was so thick you couldn't even walk through it.

Earl - We're off Sante Fe Rd, just west of Chilli, so about 6 mi from 3 sisters... I think that we have about 30 acres of brushy fields. I have tried to keep them mowed over the years, but the russian olive can just take over. Actually, the russian olive, though a pain, is relatively soft and easy to get rid of... Its the trees that have gown up beside them that are tough. I just thought that if I could get a mulching type machine in once, I could them keep it under control from that point. I was thinking of calling the pipeline owners on the back of our place, and ask them who they get to clear their right of way every so often. Those guys came through about 5 years ago and did a decent job... Any suggestions? Thanks.

I had about 25 acres cleared this summer. The guy used a D7 cat ant it cost about $500 an acre for thick brush. I still have the piles to burn. I'm in NE AR.
