My project for today. PIC

I had to replace a Briggsandstatton $279.00 6.5 intek engine today, I only get 3-4 years out of any motor for this vac blower. Well I hate to buy china stuff, but I tried a Clone honda last August from Harbor Freight for $99.00 bucks. Well I got a year on it so far, and it only had 2 problems, the plastic carb float took on gas, so I got one on ebay for 5 bucks, and the recoil rope broke, took one off a junk honda I had. Any way the china motor wont work with the new muffler, so I went to a guy who has a scrap yard, got an older honda muffler off a honda snowblower, so it will clear the blower housing.(you can see the rusty muffler in the pic) I did have to cut the shield on the muffler off to clear the blower housing though. Used an air chisel to get the 12" fan, "impeller" off the crank shaft, and put it all back together with the china motor. I will say the motors are pretty good, even if its china made. J

Heres the other china engine, with a honda recoil on it, most parts are interchangable. So if you need to replace a 5.5- 6.5hp $400 dollar honda, go to Harbor frieght. These engines dont last long fo me, picking up wet grass, and or leaves, and in dusty conditions, So heres a cheap alternitive.

Ive heard good things about these Nondas, or whatever you call the HF honda clone. Iff'n I could find one with a 6:1 gear reduction unit on the engine, I would try it. Briggs W/6:1= $319 @ northern, Honda GX 120HX= $420 @ ebay, Robin Subaru EH12-4HP-6:1=$325 @ebay. Wonder what the Nonda with 6:1 would go for?

Hello JayinNY,
The air intake for the engine is very close to the catch bag. If the bag is cloth, it breaths and the engine will suck all that dust in, reducing its life.
Elevating the air intake with a snorkel, like they do for off road vehicles, will certainly improve engine life.

Yep, Im glad you picked that out! Its been a problem with this bagger set up. We do clean the air filter daily when its dusty, when its a little wet out its fine. I should try to come up with a snorkle or something if possible sometime.

Its enought to make you sick isent it. Why cant Americans build a good engine. I have 3 B&S INTEK 2 for blower motors, and one on a LOG SPLITTER, All 3 needed to run with the choke half on?? Is it the tight emissions?? All fixed jet carbs, no adjustments at all! Just throw it away and get some other junk I guess.

Wondering, instead of keep replacing engines, why not just go buy the blower meant for that mower? The Lazers have a blower that mount on the deck and run off a belt from the right side spindle. It appears you have the bag set up from an UltraVac so why not just get the blower meant for it and never have to replace a blower motor, as well as not wasting gas running a second engine.

Well this mower is a 03, At the time I dident want to pay for the ultra vac, because I knew I could build a bagger for it. This is actually a Wheel Horse easy bagger made for a toro wheel horse garden tractor. I mounted it on this Exmark with a trac vac blower and it works great. I also dont think the 23hp Kawasaki would be enought hp to run the mower and the ultravac system. Next time I replace a mower Im gonna get the 34 hp kawie with the ultra vac,,, big bucks though..

Hello JayinNY,
When an engine needs choke to run, it usually is and indication of a restricted high speed jet.
Take a carb out of one on those engines, and take a good look at the high speed jet. It does not take much restriction HERE to make the engine starve for fuel. Also make sure that the fuel cap vent is not clogged. From the outside of the cap, you should be able to blow through it. Spider webs can clog them easly. One thing you can do,is loosen the cap while the engine is running, and take the choke off, see if that will improve the power. Fuel consumption at 1/2 choke can't bee good!
Also you can check the fuel intake at the carb including the needle and seat, for obstructions.
Guido.
