dad got this in the spring, it would move front and back, but the steering linkages, and the clutch packs were frozen up, if any of you old timers have ever messed with these old JD 450's you will know how the clutches like to freeze up even when you go on lunch break,

I never done a JD,but i've rebuild a AC HD10 front to back and a Cat D7.So i know what you're up against.
Just mind boggling how many bolts and nuts, gears and brgs and a thousand other parts make up a cat.
It ain't something for the faint of heart, thats for sure.

Curse of the dry clutch machines. If you're good about pulling the drain plugs at the bottom of the clutch housing a couple of times a year to drain condensation out they aren't a problem though. If you never drain the water out, moisture will eventually rust the clutch plates together after a year or two of sitting. I've heard you can often break them free by just getting up against something and working the clutches though. If your linkages are frozen, it's probably pretty far beyond that type of rehab, though.

Good luck with the project. I have a 1967 450. I'm guessing this one is a little bit newer since it looks like it has a factory ROPS. If you give up, I may be in the market for that fairlead :)

Anyway, if you haven't seen it already, check out jdcrawlers.com. Great message board there full of people who know these old machines inside and out and everyone there loves the pics.

Dang.......now that's a project! I wondered what all those tires were for in the first picture..........and then I saw!

service manual???wtf is that? we have a parts manual, the internet, and help from two mobile service guys .

yes it looks like a mess, but it's really very simple, as ben's mobile service said, "a poor old man on night shift put it together, shurly you boys can take it apart"

he got the winch controll cable in today, it's not oem. but will work, just gotta remount the mounting, i've been trying to help, so's i can have borrowers rights, but i find myself having more and more to do every day.

The parts manual is what you don't need anymore. All the parts drawings and availability info is on jdparts.deere.com. The service manual is pretty valuable, especially once you need to start getting things adjusted properly.

getting closer! tracks back together, tensioners out,

clutch and brakes are adjusted and covers are back on,
