Picking up the hay/grass

After mowing a row, I pich it into my truck. Then feed it to the horses, and cows. Its been about 45 degrees hi and 30s low here with no sun, so the hay keeps for a few days. Kinda like being in a fridge I guess. Stays green. This is why I was asking about a foarge harvester, or flail mower. J

You need one of the old hay loaders that put hay on the wagon loose. I've got one and this time of year when you can't dry anything for hay it works pretty well - I just cut enough for a couple of days, dry it what ever I can and load it on the wagon to feed up quickly. I do have to admit much of it is just finding an excuss to play with the toys I have.

When I was a kid this time of year the dairy farmer I worked for would mow a little in the morning, then in the pm, with no tension, would bale six inch long bales. Then after I got home from school he would pick me up with his pickup with sides on it. He drove and I walked along beside with a pitch fork and pitched the bales over the side into the truck. that was the evening meal for about 80 milkers.

Why not put up a hot wire and let them mow, bale and fertilize it all in one pass? Sure would save allot of work and fuel! Polywire is fast and easy. I use it all the time.

Since learning of them I have wanted to acquire a hay loader of old.

I priced one a few years ago in a nearby Amish area but they wanted $1,000 which was too rich for my taste. Appeared in good shape though. Don't think they use them in that area, think it was just being sold for the antique value as a yard ornament.
Antique hay loader and wagon.

That's what I was going to suggest. You can buy a couple hundred of those DARE step-in poly posts, a solar fencer, and some small gauge wire for cheaper than a flail chopper. Also, you can put up a temp fence faster than you could chop it :)

I have been suplying machinery to an Amish machinery dealer and just this summer he asked me if I knew of any hayloaders as he said they were wanting them to use again as the price of custom bailing had gotten too high. A few years ago nobody wanted them but now he cannot supply his customers that want them. I know of none avaible anyplace, saw a couple in photo ads but were way to far to be able to transport at afordable cost.
