nitrous as fuel

A friend has some high octane nitrous stuff for a little motorized remote control car. He is having a tough time getting the engine to run (new rings made it so stiff it is tough to turn over), so he was thinking if he dumped some of that fuel in it would run better. He says the bottle says it is 22% nitrous. Is he asking for trouble?

Nitrous oxide, in and of itself, is NOT a fuel source. Nitrous oxide's benefit to an engine is that it is a contains a higher percentage of oxygen than outside air.

BUT if you've ever operated a cutting torch, you also realize that simply adding more oxygen to a burning mixture only turns it into a cutting torch...unless you also add sufficient fuel to the oxygen to make it burn properly.

So nitrous oxide, with sufficient additional fuel, allows there to be more fuel and oxygen mixture in the combustion chamber during a combustion "event," resulting in more cylinder pressure as the mixture burns...more "bang" for your buck, so-to-speak.

NOW...as to the specific bottle of "stuff" you speak of...I have no idea what it is, because nitrous oxide is a GAS, not a liquid, at room temperature.

Did he set the gaps on the rings? If he puts that stuff in there he can almost count on something going wrong.....I wouldnt want to be around when he does it.

I think you are meaning "nitro" as in nitromethane instead of nitrous if you are talking about RC engine fuel. I have a RC monster truck and ran 20% nitro in it, and 30% was available for that engine.

What engine is it? Its been awhile since I've messed with mine but I think it just had one tiny piston ring. If its real stiff something else besides the piston ring(s) may be the problem.

I agree with the post below. Ring end gap might be too tight causing friction (seizure) The ring groove must also be clean!!.
They are designed to be operated on a specific fuel. Which is usually nitromethane and alcohol and lubricant, in a specific blend. Scattering the engine over several meters of earth's surface is not the best way to disassemble it. Jim

Ohhhhhhhhhh, ok. The why you worded your post it sounded like you were talking about an RC engine.

It ain't nitrous which is an oxidizer.
Nitro is an oxygen bearing fuel which must be run very rich to avoid detonation, ring damage etc.

Thirty years ago I use to put a gallon of RC airplane fuel in my motorcycle and top it off with a gallon of gas when there was good money being wagered.
Sure made er run! Mark
