Muzzleloader not again.

Bought a new muzzleloader last week to stop all the miss fires with the old one.Shot a bunch of times to sight it in.So i buy new primers, new bullets, new powder pellets and today it wont fire at a deer.I pull the breech plug and dump out the pellets and put in another set.The ones i took out in put in a seed bag and set on fire they still don't go off.

Treehugger/PETA brand powder? That is weird that it won't even burn!Pellets of WHAT would be my question. Did any of the other Pellets from the same batch work?

I have one inline that will not fire pellets . Powder ,,,works greatin it . Using 209 primer too,,still pellets misfire one out of ten . Went back to strictly power for that gun . My other one works fine with pellets . They have speed loaders for powder that work great.

Not recommended by manufacturer but done by unknown (lot) number of shooters -10 grains of 3F or sometimes 4F loaded first (a derringer flask holds about right amount) then the 30 to 50 grain pellets or 2, then the 350 grain Buffalo or Minie or REAL slug in .50 calibers. This seems to help some people in slightly damp weather have a venison roast. Mix of black powder starter and smokeless layer was old target shooting practice late 1800s to 1920s. Some of civil war re-enacters use it also for demonstrations. I know one couple that used 4F in revolvers to make sure of ignition and used the light charge 4F first in .58 Enfield replica. Pyrodex needs mag caps or a little help at times. Product liability laws are a reason for not recommending mix and don"t leave arm loaded and bounced around to mix layers- erratic ignition is possible then. I"m not recommending this-Legal Disclaimer- just noting that the use of a black powder priming charge is known to be used at times. RN.

I don't have problems like that,... but I use (real) black powder in my flintlocks. :)

Yes the rest worked.Talking with the other guys aparently oil got down into the primer area.I did test fire it after lunch.I have no explaination why no explosion in a paper bag.

Pellets wont explode in a paper bag. they just burn. junk the pellets and use powder.Side hammer and flintlock are the only true muzzle loaders all other type are space guns.I have been using black powder since it cost a buck and a quarter a pound.

Probably wouldn"t hurt to fire a couple primers through unloaded gun to be sure the passage from primer to chamber is clear. Son had one plugged with bore butter once. Guess what didn"t fire. If an inline, can you insert a needle or pin thru primer nipple to breech chamber? That has been our greatest problems. Sidelocks are very prone to having plugs in the channel between nipple and breech. Son shoots Pyrodex pellets, I use Pyrodex powder. Both are dirty, and a thorough clean is a necessity after every shoot. Nephew failed to clean a muzzle loader after use. We destroyed the breech plug getting it out. Fortunately had a spare from another gun, and were able to put gun back in service. Lesson learned. Pyrodex, and black powder are your enemy - very corrosive byproducts.

To the guy putting down inlines, there is no difference in performance other than a little more reliable firing. Don't put inline users down!

Just dont like the looks of inlines.Plastic stocks and the try to look like bolt action rifles. An inline looks strange next to my Lyman flint lock.Went to a gun show yesterday, saw plenty of plastic bolt action cartridge guns.Ugly ugly.Wouldnt take one as a gift.Gun prices have gone nuts.35 bucks a thousand for primers now.25 bucks a pound for powder.Bought a box of 380 ammo for a friend,I used to go to shows with a list of items I needed, no more.Used to find powder and primers at decent prices. The casehardened finish is gone from NEF shot guns now that Remington is making them.I would like to buy a 1911 45 but the prices I saw turned me off .
