Red Antifreeze

Got a rather new for this farm 2004 Mahindra. When
checking antifreeze this tractor's antifreeze is red. Not
the pinkish stuff in newer GM autos, just a red that you
can see through. Only tested to -10 so want to drain
some and add more pure but no one in this town ever
heard of red . Rather than mix red & green, i guess I'll
drain & re-fill. Any thoughts?

Caterpillar sells an extended life antifreeze that is red in color. They have a 50/50 mix part# 238-8648 and full strength part# 238-8647.
Hope this helps Richard.

some of the imports use red antifreeze, the color is just the dye that the use. try to find out if it is extended or regualer. then add as needed. David

the orange that gm uses called dex cool mixes with nothing else i think it has a different base . red is probably and extened life i have been told that you could mixgreen with them never tried it

I don't know about mixing the red and green, but there is a YELLOW universal anti-freeze that can be mixed with any color.

I have 2 gallons of Rotella either ELC or XLC (extended life coolant) that is red, and I believe on the jug it says it's formulated for diesels (no need to add the additive to prevent cavitation and such).. I don't know if it's red because it's "extended" or if it's just a Rotella thing.

At least in the US Red is typically extended life coolant, designed for diesel engines and will run 300,000 miles or so before adding any SCA's to it.

This is the Shell Rotella ELC, CAT ELC, or the Fleetguard OAT type of stuff. Mixing it with green won't cause any explosions or anything but it will negate all the extended life part of the red stuff and you'll need to change it as you do the cheapo green stuff. Any of the various red varieties are compatable with eachother. We run the Rotalla ELC in our truck fleet without any problems.

Any semi truck dealer will carry some variation of the extended life coolant, usually around $10 a gallon and its premixed 50/50 ready to pour in.

By the way, if it is extended life coolant, your typical coolant testers with the floating balls in them [u:ec90fa2f25]will not[/u:ec90fa2f25] get an accurate reading on it, probably why it only tested at -10... they make test strips for the new stuff.

Ive been telling everyone for years the exact same info you recieved, and noone would listen. Everyone use to think if its red, its Dexcool and it was evil! Theres several good HD coolants on the market, Ive been running the Rotella for years and have yet to have a single coolant related problem!

Since it was made off shore its hard to say what is in it. Could be kool-aid. (not knocking your tractor)

I'd be inclined to drain and flush it then put in the antifreeze of your choice. Most brand names are ok, you can go with extended life ones like others have said but the KEY thing is to use ONLY distilled water when mixing. Pretty cheap at $1/gal versus a major engine problem.

Good luck.

If the red stuff came from the mahindra factory, surely a mahindra dealer could tell you what it is. If it is the extended stuff, draining it for nothing is just wasting expensive coolant.
