Bought some new batteries from a local battery wholesale place. They are "supposed" to be 850 CCA they ar ethe slim 6 volt most '06's take. They arent worth a crap, starter is rebuilt, it just cranks slow and starts are hard. I hook the boosters up to the truck, and she spins right over and fires right up. I am tempted to go to IH dealer and get the IH branded batteries. Very frustrated as I bought a set for both '06's. Yes, i have the reciept and your darn tooten i am bringing them back.

Bought new 6 volts for the 4020 John Deere from fleet farm about 5 years ago. They still crank it over plenty fast enough, but below about 30 I just plug it in for easier starting. Above 30 and it will fire right off. Beyond 5 years, anything they last is a bonus in my opinion.

Sounds like you got a size too small. Are they 3EHs or 4EHs ? 4EH from NAPA will have 930 CCA. Used them in my 856 for years, usually got 5-6 years out of them, BUT it's NOT NEAR as cold here as in MN.

You may have a weak cell in one of those batteries. Have them checked with a hydrometer. Remember, a battery is like a chain, it will only pull as much as it's weakest link.

I just checked the batteries in my 4020. It uses the long slim 6 volts like yours. They are just 850 CCA too but they have a 360 minute reserve at 25 amps. I have found that some of these cheap batteries have a good CCA rating but not much reserve. I buy my batteries at several places but they are all Excide batteries. John Deere, CIH, Napa, all are the same batteries with just different labels. They are made in Manchester, Iowa. I have had very good luck with these Excide batteries. I just call around and see who is cheapest when I need them. Right now they are $111.29 each at John Deere.

Also check your cables out. I had my 3020 diesel start cranking slow last year. I tried several things and found that one of the battery cables was corroded inside the insulation. I replaced it and it cranked fine after that. Try hooking up your jumper cables in parallel to your battery cable and see if it cranks better if it does then you have a bad cable/connection.
