John Deere 410C Fuel problems

The machine (410C Backhoe)had been sitting for a very long time. With a new battery, oil change some fresh fuel, fuel additive, it fired up and ran strong for about 30 minutes until I shut it down. I noticed the fuel return line to the tank was leaking so I replaced it as well as a fuel filter. It has been a number of years since I have had to bleed a fuel system or even work on a tractor. I thought I did everything correct, but the machine now will start instantly but will only idle for 5-10 seconds then die. Can someone walk me through the correct process of bleeding this machine. Thanks

The system is basically self-bleeding. But, if you just put a new filter on, you can speed up the bleeding process by loosening the bleeder-screw on the filter housing. Then crank the engine (with the power off at the pump), or pump the hand-lever on the fuel pump - until fuel comes out the filter-bleeder in a steady stream. Like I said though, it is self-bleeding, but can take a while if you've got a filter full of air. You may have other problems.

Also, any other information or knowledge of the machine (i.e. common problems, things to look for etc.) would be greatly appreciated, thanks again.

I don"t think you have air in the system if it starts and then dies. I think you have a problem in the return line. If the pump can"t return fuel to the tank, which it returns more at idle, it builds pressure up internally and quits pumping fuel. Remove the return line at the injection pump. Start it and see if it runs then. If it does then you have a blockage in the return line/system. Remove the fuel cap and blow air through the return line and you should hear a good steady flow. I had a 4020 drive me nuts this spring. It had restriction in the return system. I finally went fitting to fitting checking if I had flow. I found a piece of rubber stuck in the elbow at the tank, came out of the injection pump which was what I was replacing. Removed it and all was well.

Remove return line from inj pump and try cranking engine. If fuel comes out of inj pump at fitting and engine runs the return line is you problem. If no fuel comes out of fitting then check valve in fitting is plugged. Fuel control solenoid in inj pump could be bad. Does it click when key switch is turned on?
