I understand when Murray Hebblethwaite visited Australia's Golden Triangle he toured a working Gold Mine in Bendigo, Victoria. With the escorted tour, literately way down under, the miners use pneumatic tractor loaders to move the material. Using pneumatic equipment reduces the smog, but of course there is a noise factor.
 
I thought most underground rolling mining equipment was electric except where there are methane concentrations that approach the lower explosive limit (LEL). That was probably the case in that gold mine. I'll bet there are still places that still use miniature horses and donkeys that never see the light of day until they die.

They are probably dragged out and butchered for local consumption. Waste not, want not. Or maybe they are shipped to France.
 
They turn em into glue,belts,shoes,gloves,blankets,dog food,meat to eat,(ugh),bone meal, Seat covers,leather jackets, etc,etc,etc.

I really appreciate your interest, I found a couple of videos on You Tube, follow the links to Bendigo Mine Tours of Central Deborah Gold Mine. I am sure you will really enjoy these latest videos posted on You Tube! This particular Gold Mine is on a small scale, on a higher level is/was an Under-Ground Restaurant.
Watching this video brings back the fond memories of experiencing being truly down-under. You may be able to see the pneumatic loader actually work, no promises!

There are several lead mines in our area, and the drilling and loading equipment is mostly electric, but the transport rigs are diesel, as are the tractors used to drag the electric cables around when the electric equipment is moved. No gasoline engines allowed due to carbon monoxide. These mines have exhaust and intake fans big enough to drive a motor home into.
