O/T Bone cancer and farmers

I just did some work for a woman who lost her husband (at 63 yo) to bone cancer last fall. She told me that bone cancer is more likely among farmers because of dust and sprays. I didn't know this.

Anyone else know about this and what you can do to reduce your odds of getting it?

"what you can do to reduce your odds of getting it?"

Die of something else BEFORE you get cancer, perhaps???

The Uni. of Iowa has been testing farmers for years for this type of stuff.

They have not found cancer in farmers at any higher rate than the city people.

Every body dies of something.
IMO no real way of preventing something you don't know you may or may not get.

Funny you should bring this up. Just yesterday I ran across a neighbor of mine. Older gentalman. 88 yrs old and still activley farming. Anyway he has been taking treatments last couple months for cancer of the lymph nodes. He said doctors told him that is more prevalent in farmers. His prognosis is good as they caught it early. He also has a very up beat attitude which helps alot. He said if left to long caner of the lymph nodes can move into the bones and then it is to late. Then we talked about the harvest and the hail we had last summer and then he had to get back to work as he runs the 9400 combine for all the harvest. Yep, 88 yrs old and does all the harvesting. Said the boy is to young to run the combine. The boy took my oldest sister to senior prom which means he is about 61 or 62 yrs old.

There is the thought that DDT may be the cause. First wife died of cancer it first occurred when she was 35!!! She was a farm girl of the 50's and her parents (as many did) often sprayed the kids with DDT before they went to the graden , fileds, berry patch, etc.

Never heard of it and don't believe it; there is a statistical link between farmers who drink lots of water and death. THEY ALL DIE!!!!!!!

Well there were a lot of guys who were in Vietnam that got sprayed with Agent Orange and died from cancer. So whatever was in Agent Orange was in the spray farmers used for a long time.I just want to add that Agent Orange was made by Monsanto.

So that caused a bunch of farmers to die probably. Also since then who knows what they have took out of, or put in weed killing spray.I notice most people here hire the COOP to spray for them.It is probably a lot better now since they have cabs on the sprayers,or some people use planes to spray.
It might be interesting to see if guys who do the spraying have cancer more often than the rest of the population.

I think what it was in Agent Orange was PCBs or something.

I will say this though,my grandpa never used tractors at all, only horses. He died of cancer in 1968 at 77 years old.It was probably a type of cancer they could fix now maybe. He drank a lot of coffee, ate a lot of salt pork.

You are going to die of something, and it doesnt hurt to be careful with chemicals.Actually I think that bug spray, pesticide, or Aldrin would kill you before Treflan(which was kind of a mild form of Agent Orange) would, but Im no scientist either. Also smoking ,drinking coffee,or a lot of caffeine, eating a bunch of sugar, all are hard on you.

Doctors tell you that drinking a lot is bad for you.Well with car wrecks and stuff if you drive drunk you might get killed,or kill other people, but most everybody I knew that drank whiskey lived a long time if they didnt get killed in an accident.Plus some people that drank a lot died before they made 50 years old.Usually of cancer or something.

So for one thing what they say about it and what the facts are might be a long ways from what reality is.Some people get heart disease and others dont. Some people get cancer and others dont. There are things that they say cause cancer, which are probably found in other stuff besides weed killer and dust.

Another thing is proven too is that the more pollution in the river, the further downstream the more cancer there is.Like the Mississippi has a lot of people with cancer way down there.

Pollution does cause bad stuff to happen. Also they do find evidence of the stuff in weed killer in the water that everybody drinks.

So I think the right thing to say about this is that man causes cancer with all of his crap he has made.Back when there wasnt a lot of man made crap if you made it to 50 you were an old man.So extreme temperature change, burning wood in the winter with out much regulation of the heat, going from heat inside to extreme cold outside in the winter, eating food without refrigeration and other things have killed lots and lots of people. So man has made things to where you can live longer if you are lucky as well.

So does this answer your question?

Depends on where you are. In a 2 mile radius of our family farm there were 5 families. In four of the families the husband died before age 59, in the 5th the husband died at age 68 - all had cancer. All five of the wives have been treated for ovarian cancer, two have died by age 65. Of the children in those families 3 died by age 25 - all cancer. Most of the rest have grown up and moved away (like me) and its hard to keep track of what is going on with them now.

I keep my life insurance paid up.

I would think that bone cancer would be a problem for farmers and truck drivers a like caused from a chemical reation by wetting down rubber tires. Might want to get a check up.

The VA has decided that Agent Orange used in Viet Nam is a probable cause of diabetes and if you put feet down on the ground there You can get benefits and treatment for diabetes as service connected. Relayed to me by my assigned Dr. at the VA.

The biggest problem with Agent Orange was it was contaminated with dioxin. The dioxin was not intended to be there but was a result of how the AO was manufactured. Most chemicals have beneficial uses, but I have never heard of anything good about dioxin.

My dad died from bone cancer in 98. about a month later I saw a news clip about a study from a university in Minnesota. They found that MN farmers in their 50's were dying from bone cancer at 10x the rate of non farmers. I think they suspected attrizine .

(quoted from post at 11:38:31 10/14/10) Because Monsanto is the devil.
